Leavitt passes for 289 yards, Jackson Harris catches two touchdowns and LSU's defense delivers its first home shutout of an SEC opponent since 2006.
BATON ROUGE, La. | Sam Leavitt threw four touchdown passes, including two to Jackson Harris, and No. 22 LSU dominated No. 16 Mississippi State 31-0 on Saturday at Tiger Stadium, delivering its first home shutout against a Southeastern Conference opponent in nearly two decades.
Leavitt completed 31 of 38 passes for 289 yards without an interception, directing an efficient LSU offense that scored touchdowns on its first three possessions. The Tigers' defense was equally impressive, forcing an interception and repeatedly denying Mississippi State on fourth down.
The shutout marked LSU's first at home against an SEC opponent since a victory over Kentucky on Oct. 14, 2006.
LSU seized control early when Leavitt capped an eight-play, 60-yard opening drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Eugene Wilson III, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 9:57 remaining in the first quarter.
Mississippi State threatened to respond, but safety Ty Benefield intercepted an overthrown pass from quarterback Puckett after pressure from defensive end Jordan Ross.
Leavitt capitalized on the defensive stop, finding Harris for a 27-yard touchdown to finish a 10-play, 85-yard drive. Harris broke a tackle and powered through two defenders on his way into the end zone, extending LSU's lead to 14-0.
The Tigers continued to dictate the game in the second quarter.
After Ross and Dylan Carpenter combined to stop Puckett for a 6-yard loss on fourth-and-1, Leavitt connected with Harris again, this time on a 17-yard touchdown pass that pushed LSU's advantage to 21-0 with 6:13 left before halftime.
Mississippi State mounted a 13-play, 73-yard drive late in the half but came away empty when LSU stopped a fourth-down completion short of the line to gain at the Tigers' 2-yard line.
LSU opened the second half with a methodical 16-play, 74-yard possession that consumed 8:10. Scott Starzyk finished the drive with a 26-yard field goal, increasing the lead to 24-0 midway through the third quarter.
The Bulldogs' offensive struggles continued as cornerback PJ Woodland broke up another fourth-down pass, giving LSU possession and another scoring opportunity.
Leavitt responded with his fourth touchdown pass, connecting with Malik Elzy from 6 yards out to make it 31-0 with 31 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
LSU's defense delivered another fourth-down stop early in the fourth when Ja'Keem Jackson broke up a pass intended for Marquis Johnson. It was the Tigers' fourth consecutive fourth-down stop, extinguishing another Mississippi State scoring opportunity.
Linebacker TJ Dottery led LSU with 12 tackles, while Davhon Keys added 10 tackles and half a sack.
Running back Dilin Jones provided balance offensively, rushing for 84 yards on 14 carries and catching eight passes for 58 yards.
The victory highlighted LSU's effectiveness on both sides of the ball against a ranked conference opponent, with Leavitt's precision passing complementing a defense that repeatedly turned away Mississippi State in critical situations.
LSU will travel to Auburn next Saturday for an 11 a.m. Central kickoff. The game is scheduled to be televised nationally on ABC or ESPN.
