Alabama Opens 2026 Season With 48-10 Rout of East Carolina Behind Keelon Russell’s Debut

Crimson Tide quarterback accounts for 342 total yards; Ryan Coleman-Williams tops 100 receiving yards and Alabama’s defense smothers ECU in dominant opener

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | Alabama opened the 2026 season with the kind of performance expected from a national contender.

The No. 13/11 Crimson Tide rolled past East Carolina 48-10 on Saturday at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium, combining an explosive offensive debut from quarterback Keelon Russell with a suffocating defensive effort that held the Pirates to just 162 total yards.

Alabama finished with 487 yards of offense, scored on all six of its first-half possessions and received contributions from nearly every part of the roster.

Russell, making his first career start, accounted for 342 total yards, completing 18 of 30 passes for 256 yards while rushing for 86 yards and a touchdown.

That total ranks second in Alabama history for a quarterback making his starting debut, just one yard behind Bryce Young’s 343-yard performance.

Keelon Russell Makes Immediate Impact

Russell looked comfortable from the opening possession.

He directed Alabama to points on its first drive and continued to move the offense throughout the first half, accounting for 236 total yards before halftime — the most by an Alabama quarterback in one half during a starting debut.

The Crimson Tide amassed 304 yards in the opening half and scored on every possession, building a commanding 38-7 halftime lead.

Russell’s athleticism gave Alabama an added dimension, particularly when plays broke down.

He finished the first half with 182 passing yards and 54 rushing yards before adding his first rushing touchdown late in the second quarter on a 3-yard run.

For Alabama, the debut offered an encouraging glimpse of what its offense could become with Russell at the controls.

Ryan Coleman-Williams Delivers Another Big Receiving Day

Wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams provided the biggest plays through the air.

Coleman-Williams finished with 130 receiving yards on five catches, marking the fourth 100-yard receiving game of his career.

His biggest play came in the second quarter, when he hauled in a 58-yard reception that set up Daniel Hill’s second rushing touchdown.

Coleman-Williams also contributed 27 return yards and helped give Alabama favorable field position throughout the afternoon.

His combination of explosiveness and reliability gave Russell a dependable target and consistently stressed the East Carolina secondary.

Alabama Ground Game Produces Five Touchdowns

The Crimson Tide also showed considerable depth in the backfield.

Eight Alabama players recorded positive rushing yardage, while four different rushers combined for five rushing touchdowns.

Daniel Hill led the way with two scores, giving him the second multi-touchdown game of his career.

Freshman EJ Crowell scored Alabama’s first touchdown of the season on a 3-yard run in the opening quarter, becoming the first freshman to score the Crimson Tide’s first touchdown of a season since Terry Grant in 2007.

Trae’shawn Brown added his first career rushing touchdown in his collegiate debut, scoring from 2 yards early in the fourth quarter.

Russell’s 86 rushing yards led the team.

Yhonzae Pierre Sparks Alabama Defense

Alabama’s defense was just as impressive.

The Crimson Tide held East Carolina to only two rushing yards, the fewest rushing yards allowed by Alabama since 2021.

The defining defensive moment came in the second quarter.

With Alabama already leading 24-7, Yhonzae Pierre intercepted ECU quarterback Mitch Griffins and returned the pass 27 yards for a touchdown.

It was Pierre’s first career score and Alabama’s first non-offensive touchdown in a season opener since 2018.

Pierre also recorded three tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack.

Fatutoa Henry and Terrence Green added sacks, while Zabien Brown, Dijon Lee Jr. and Bray Hubbard each finished with three tackles.

Since 2015, Alabama has now scored 47 defensive touchdowns and has forced at least one turnover in 135 of 155 games.

Crimson Tide Take Control Early

Alabama seized control almost immediately.

Conor Talty opened the scoring with a field goal on the Tide’s first possession, marking the second straight season Alabama scored on its opening drive and the fifth time in the past six seasons.

Crowell’s touchdown made it 10-0 before the end of the first quarter.

Hill added a 4-yard score early in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 17-0.

East Carolina briefly answered when Griffins found Jeremiah Melvin for a 1-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 17-7.

That proved to be the Pirates’ only touchdown of the game.

Alabama responded with 21 unanswered points before halftime.

Hill scored again after Coleman-Williams’ 58-yard reception, Pierre returned an interception for a touchdown, and Russell capped a 15-play, 80-yard drive with a 3-yard scoring run.

By halftime, Alabama led 38-7 and had essentially decided the game.

Alabama Defense Clamps Down After Halftime

East Carolina managed only a 34-yard Noah Perez field goal in the second half.

The Pirates’ offense never established a rushing threat and struggled to sustain drives against Alabama’s front seven.

Meanwhile, Alabama continued to grind away.

Brown scored on the first play of the fourth quarter, giving the Tide its fifth rushing touchdown of the day.

Talty later added a 21-yard field goal to complete the scoring.

The 48-10 final reflected how thoroughly Alabama controlled the game in all three phases.

Alabama Extends Long List of Winning Streaks

The victory continued several impressive Alabama streaks.

The Crimson Tide earned their 89th consecutive home victory over an unranked opponent and won their 25th straight home opener, the second-longest active streak in the country.

Alabama improved to 104-22-3 all-time in season openers, good for an .816 winning percentage.

The Tide have also won 23 of their past 24 season openers and 12 consecutive home season openers dating to 2001.

Alabama improved to 86-11-2 all-time in home-opening games.

Those numbers reinforce the larger point: Alabama remains one of the most difficult teams in the country to beat at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Up Next: Alabama Opens SEC Play at Kentucky

The schedule gets more difficult immediately.

Alabama travels to Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 12, for its SEC opener.

Kickoff between the Crimson Tide and Wildcats is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

After a 38-point victory, 487 yards of offense and a defense that allowed only two rushing yards, Alabama will head into conference play with momentum.

The biggest storyline, however, may be Russell.

His debut suggested the Crimson Tide may already have found the kind of dynamic quarterback play needed to make another championship run.
