Clemson Football: Tigers Erase 14-Point Deficit, Rally Past North Carolina 28-20 in ACC Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. | North Carolina controlled the first half. Clemson owned the finish.

The Tigers erased a 14-point deficit and scored 22 second-half points to rally past North Carolina 28-20 Saturday at Memorial Stadium in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Clemson (2-1, 1-0 ACC) trailed 17-3 during the second quarter before closing the game on a 25-3 run. The Tigers took their first lead late in the fourth quarter on Gideon Davidson’s 8-yard touchdown run, then added an insurance score after a critical fourth-down stop.

North Carolina (2-1, 0-1) rushed for a season-high 214 yards and led 17-6 at halftime but could not sustain an offense that controlled the opening two quarters.

True freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds overcame a slow start and an interception in his first career start for Clemson, completing 20 of 29 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown.

Davidson rushed 16 times for 105 yards and a score.

Maryland Football: Virginia Tech Ends Terps’ 20-Game Nonconference Win Streak With 35-26 Victory

Malik Washington throws for 359 yards and three touchdowns and Chris Durr Jr. delivers a career night, but Maryland’s fourth-quarter rally falls short before a sellout crowd at SECU Stadium.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. | Maryland mounted a fourth-quarter comeback behind quarterback Malik Washington, but Virginia Tech had already done enough damage to end one of the longest active streaks in college football.

The Hokies defeated Maryland 35-26 Saturday night before a sellout crowd of 46,185 at SECU Stadium, handing the Terrapins their first loss of the season and ending their nation-leading 20-game nonconference winning streak.

Maryland (2-1) had not lost a nonconference game since 2019.

Washington completed 30 of 43 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns, while Chris Durr Jr. caught 12 passes for 109 yards and two scores.

But Virginia Tech (3-0) generated 445 yards of offense and converted 10 of 16 third downs, repeatedly extending drives and keeping Maryland's defense on the field.

“Obviously a disappointing night for us,” Maryland coach Michael Locksley said. “I like the way the team kept fighting. We’ll learn from this one.”
