Avery Glynn and Michelle Fumagalli earn MOP honors as the Tigers win three of four events at home
AUBURN, Ala. | No. 3 Auburn won three of four events and received Most Outstanding Performer honors from senior Avery Glynn and junior Michelle Fumagalli in a 12-7 victory over No. 5 SMU on Saturday at the Auburn University Equestrian Center.
The Tigers took Flat 4-1, Reining 3-1-1 and Horsemanship 3-2. SMU earned its lone event victory in Fences, 3-2.
“Today was a great win against a top-five team,” Auburn coach Jessica Braswell said. “SMU is really tough.”
Glynn sets the tone in Flat
Glynn led Auburn's strong start, scoring an 86 to defeat SMU's Caroline Signorino, who posted a 75.5. The performance earned Glynn MOP honors.
Junior Kate Hagerty edged Rachel Brandt 79.5-79 to open the event, while freshman Taylor Cawley added a 66.5-62 victory.
Junior Ariana Marnell completed Auburn's four-point performance with a 79.5-71.5 win.
The Tigers carried a 4-1 advantage into Reining.
Fumagalli earns first career MOP
Auburn extended its lead by going 3-1-1 in Reining.
Fumagalli earned the first MOP honor of her career after scoring 71.5 to defeat SMU's Violet Shetler, who posted a 69.
Auburn also received victories from Callie Hogg and sophomore Sofia Tieche, who scored 69.5 and 63.5, respectively.
Sophomore Kailee Rife and SMU's Addi Schmersal each scored 71.75 for the event's lone tie.
The performance gave Auburn a 7-2 lead at the break.
SMU responds in Fences
The Mustangs cut into Auburn's advantage by taking Fences 3-2 to open the second half.
After SMU claimed the first two points, Cawley responded with an 85.5-77 victory over Madison Stewart.
Marnell followed with an 88.5-84.5 win over Taryn McEntire before the Mustangs captured the final point.
Horsemanship seals Auburn victory
Auburn closed the meet by taking three of five points in Horsemanship, with each of its victories decided by one point or less.
Senior Brooke Jolstad earned a 74.75-74 win, while Callie Hogg added her second point of the meet with a 75.5-74.5 victory.
Freshman Charlie Brooks then scored 72.5 to defeat her SMU opponent's 71.75, earning the first victory of her collegiate career and helping secure Auburn's 12-7 win.
“We definitely have some things to clean up,” Braswell said. “But overall, I'm very happy and proud of our performance.”
South Carolina up next
Auburn remains home to host No. 2 South Carolina on Friday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m. CT.
The “Something in the Orange” meet will recognize Student-Athlete Mental Health Awareness and feature orange boot koozie giveaways. A Kids Zone, food trucks and concessions also will be available. Admission is free.
