Crimson Tide withstands late Gamecocks rally to secure 3-1 win as Olivia Borgman records 12 kills and Ally Cavanaugh delivers a season-best performance.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | Alabama volleyball overcame a strong second-set performance and a late fourth-set rally by South Carolina to defeat the Gamecocks 3-1 on Friday night at Foster Auditorium, earning its first Southeastern Conference victory of the season.
The Crimson Tide (9-5, 1-4 SEC) won 25-17, 22-25, 25-14, 25-22, handing South Carolina (8-7, 1-4) its fourth conference loss.
South Carolina's Olivia Borgman led the Gamecocks with 12 kills, while Ally Cavanaugh delivered a season-high 11 kills and a .579 hitting percentage. Despite those performances, Alabama controlled key stretches of the match and closed out a tightly contested fourth set.
Alabama established an early advantage in the opening set, using a four-point run to build an 8-3 lead. South Carolina trimmed the deficit to 12-10 behind Borgman, Elise Marchal and Ceci Vance, but the Crimson Tide responded with another surge to take the set 25-17.
The Gamecocks answered in the second set with their strongest offensive showing of the night.
Trailing 15-11, South Carolina rallied behind timely kills and defensive stops, eventually pulling even at 18. A 7-1 run gave the Gamecocks a 22-19 advantage before they finished off a 25-22 victory to tie the match.
South Carolina hit .409 in the set while limiting Alabama to .067.
The Crimson Tide regained control in the third, turning an early 3-1 deficit into a commanding lead. Alabama built a 17-9 advantage and cruised to a 25-14 victory to move within one set of the match.
South Carolina threatened to force a decisive fifth set, taking an 11-7 lead in the fourth behind Cavanaugh's offense and Ava Leahy's blocking.
Alabama responded with consecutive four-point runs to regain the advantage, but the Gamecocks refused to fold.
Trailing 21-17, South Carolina scored four straight points, including two Cavanaugh kills, to tie the set at 21. The Crimson Tide answered by winning four of the final five points, securing the 25-22 set victory and the match.
Sydney Floyd and Kiana Dinn finished with 14 assists apiece for South Carolina. Floyd added a season-high eight digs, while Lilly Gillespie led the Gamecocks with 11 digs.
Marchal and Leahy contributed four blocks each as South Carolina showed flashes of strong defense despite the loss.
Borgman's 12 kills marked her 10th match this season with at least 11, while Cavanaugh reached double-digit kills for the first time this season.
South Carolina continues its four-match road trip Sunday against Mississippi State, with first serve scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern.
