JJ Buchanan delivers a Michigan Stadium miracle as No. 16 Wolverines overcome three turnovers and a late five-point deficit to escape Western Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. | Michigan needed one second, one throw and one remarkable catch to turn what appeared destined to be a stunning season-opening defeat into an unforgettable victory. With No. 16 Michigan trailing Western Michigan by five and the clock about to expire, quarterback Bryce Underwood launched a desperation pass toward the end zone. JJ Buchanan came down with the 47-yard Hail Mary as time expired, delivering a dramatic walk-off touchdown and sending Michigan Stadium into celebration.
Call it the Michigan Miracle.
For a Wolverines team that struggled offensively for much of the afternoon, the final play erased nearly everything that had gone wrong. Michigan overcame three turnovers, a 30% third-down conversion rate and a Western Michigan offense that controlled the football for long stretches of the second half.
Most importantly, the Wolverines escaped their opener with a victory, improving to 9-0 all-time against Western Michigan.
JJ Buchanan Becomes Michigan's Opening-Day Hero
Buchanan could hardly have picked a more dramatic moment for his first touchdown in a Michigan uniform.
Trailing by five with only 35 seconds remaining, the Wolverines pushed the ball to midfield and managed to preserve one final second.
That was enough.
Underwood sent the football deep, and Buchanan emerged with the 47-yard touchdown reception on the game's final play.

The catch capped a career afternoon for Buchanan, who finished with six receptions for 126 yards and the game-winning touchdown, establishing career highs in both catches and receiving yards.
His impact began well before the final play.
Buchanan made his first two catches as a Wolverine on Michigan's opening possession, including an impressive one-handed catch-and-run that gained 20 yards.
By the end of the night, however, one catch would overshadow them all.
Bryce Underwood Starts Fast Before Michigan Offense Stalls
Michigan initially looked ready to take command.
Underwood completed all five of his passes on the opening drive as the Wolverines marched down the field. He eventually finished the possession himself, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run just over five minutes into the game.
Michigan accumulated 72 yards on the drive and appeared poised for a productive offensive afternoon.
Then the Wolverines stalled.
Michigan punted on four consecutive possessions after its opening touchdown, allowing Western Michigan to remain within striking distance.
The Wolverines' defense prevented those offensive struggles from becoming a larger problem.
Michigan forced Western Michigan into five consecutive scoreless possessions, including four punts and a turnover on downs, helping the Wolverines maintain their advantage into halftime.
Michigan Defense Keeps Wolverines Alive
While Michigan's offense searched for answers, its defense repeatedly delivered.
Junior edge rusher Dom Nichols recorded a career-best 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, including a crucial third-down sack that forced Western Michigan to punt.
Senior linebacker Troy Bowles was equally important, producing a career-high 12 tackles, including two tackles for loss.
Their performances helped keep the game within Michigan's reach even as the Broncos began dictating the pace after halftime.
Western Michigan leaned on ball control in the second half and eventually grabbed the lead behind two field goals.
The most punishing possession was a 20-play, 71-yard drive that consumed 13 minutes, 40 seconds and ended with a 39-yard field goal.
For Michigan, it was an exercise in patience — and frustration.
The Wolverines managed just four second-half possessions before their final touchdown drive. Two ended with punts and another with a turnover.
That left Michigan with one final opportunity.
Wolverines Overcome Three Turnovers
Michigan's victory was anything but clean.
Three turnovers and struggles on third down gave Western Michigan repeated opportunities to pull off what would have been a major upset at Michigan Stadium.
Instead, the Wolverines survived.
The final sequence demonstrated the razor-thin margin between a season-opening shocker and a celebration that will likely live on Michigan highlight reels for years.
With 35 seconds remaining, Michigan needed a touchdown.
With one second remaining, it needed a miracle.
Buchanan provided it.
The 47-yard touchdown transformed Michigan's opener from a warning sign into one of the most dramatic finishes of the young college football season.
But the Wolverines will also know that the issues exposed by Western Michigan cannot simply be erased by one spectacular play.
Three turnovers, four consecutive punts and a 30% third-down conversion rate could prove far more costly against Michigan's next opponent.
No. 10 Oklahoma Awaits Michigan
There will be little time for Michigan to enjoy its escape.
The Wolverines remain at Michigan Stadium next Saturday, Sept. 12, for a marquee nonconference showdown against No. 10 Oklahoma.
The matchup represents a significant step up in competition and should provide a much clearer picture of where Michigan stands early in the 2026 season.
The game will feature a Maize Out and is scheduled for noon on Fox.
Michigan will enter that showdown undefeated — barely.
Against Western Michigan, the Wolverines learned that sometimes the difference between heartbreak and victory is just one second and 47 yards.
And on opening day in Ann Arbor, Buchanan made both count.
