Alabama Football: Keelon Russell Accounts for 5 TDs as No. 8 Crimson Tide Crush South Carolina 49-18

Russell throws for 365 yards and four touchdowns, adds another score on the ground as Alabama rolls up 489 yards and improves to 4-0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | Keelon Russell threw deep, ran when needed and spent much of Saturday night turning South Carolina's defense into a highlight reel for Alabama.

Russell accounted for a career-high 400 yards of total offense and five touchdowns as No. 8 Alabama overwhelmed South Carolina 49-18 before a sold-out crowd at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The Crimson Tide (4-0, 2-0 SEC) scored 35 points in the first half, generated 489 yards of total offense and produced eight plays of at least 20 yards in another explosive performance.

Russell completed 21 of 27 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns while adding 35 yards and a score on the ground.

Three of his touchdown passes covered more than 30 yards.

By halftime, Alabama had effectively taken control.

RUSSELL IGNITES ALABAMA OFFENSE

After Alabama's defense stopped South Carolina on downs, Russell needed one play to make the Gamecocks pay.

He connected with Lotzeir Brooks for a 75-yard touchdown, giving Alabama a 7-0 lead with 5:53 remaining in the first quarter.

It was only the beginning.

Russell found Ryan Coleman-Williams for a 32-yard touchdown as the opening quarter expired, finishing a nine-play, 70-yard drive and doubling Alabama's advantage.

South Carolina (2-2, 0-2) finally got on the scoreboard with Malik Orsan's 34-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

Alabama answered with another deep strike.

Russell hit Coleman-Williams for a 42-yard touchdown with 7:22 remaining before halftime, extending the lead to 21-3.

Coleman-Williams finished with five catches for a team-high 98 yards and two touchdowns.

Russell was not finished.

Josh Ford made a one-handed 3-yard touchdown catch with 2:33 remaining, giving Russell his fourth touchdown pass of the half and Alabama a commanding 28-3 advantage.

The Crimson Tide defense needed only 13 seconds to score again.

RED MORGAN TURNS PICK INTO SIX

On South Carolina's next snap, Red Morgan intercepted LaNorris Sellers and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown.

Just like that, Alabama led 35-3.

The pick-six was Alabama's third in four games this season and gave the Crimson Tide six interceptions overall.

South Carolina finally reached the end zone when Sellers connected with Nyck Harbor for a 41-yard touchdown with 35 seconds remaining in the half, trimming Alabama's advantage to 35-10.

But the damage had already been done.

Alabama's 35 first-half points were its most against an SEC opponent under coach Kalen DeBoer, while the 25-point halftime advantage was the program's largest in a conference game since beating Vanderbilt in 2022.

SOUTH CAROLINA RALLIES, ALABAMA SLAMS THE DOOR

After a scoreless third quarter, the Gamecocks opened the fourth with their best sustained drive of the night.

South Carolina marched 75 yards in 13 plays, with Matt Fuller scoring on a 9-yard run. Maurice Brown II added the two-point conversion to cut Alabama's lead to 35-18.

Any hopes of a dramatic comeback quickly disappeared.

The Crimson Tide responded with a 10-play, 74-yard drive, capped by Daniel Hill's 1-yard touchdown run with 7:40 remaining.

Alabama then added one final statement.

Russell finished a seven-play, 49-yard possession with a 9-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes, completing a five-touchdown night and putting the finishing touches on another lopsided Alabama victory.

RUSSELL JOINS ELITE ALABAMA COMPANY

Russell's performance continued a torrid start to the season.

The Alabama quarterback has generated at least 300 yards of total offense in three of the Crimson Tide's first four games and has topped 300 passing yards in consecutive contests.

He also became the first Alabama quarterback since Tua Tagovailoa in 2018 to record at least 300 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown in consecutive games.

Russell's four first-half touchdown passes were the most by an Alabama quarterback in an SEC game since Bryce Young threw four against Vanderbilt in 2022.

He also became the first Crimson Tide quarterback since Mac Jones in 2020 to account for at least 300 yards of offense in three of Alabama's first four games.

The numbers reflect an offense that has been relentless through the opening month.

Alabama has scored at least 45 points in each of its first four games for just the third time in program history and the first time since 2018.

The Crimson Tide also became the first FBS program since LSU's 2019 national championship team to score at least 45 points in each of its first four games.

ALABAMA DEFENSE KEEPS CREATING POINTS

The offense supplied the fireworks, but Alabama's defense continued creating scoring opportunities.

Luke Metz recorded a career-high 13 tackles and recovered a fumble, while Caleb Wilson added 12 tackles.

Morgan finished with eight tackles, including one for loss, in addition to his 23-yard interception return.

Alabama has forced nine turnovers through four games, its most over that span since 2019.

The Crimson Tide has converted those nine takeaways into 45 points. Alabama has also forced four turnovers on downs, turning those possessions into another 25 points.

That combination has helped make Alabama dangerous even when its offense is not initially on the field.

DEBOER, ALABAMA CONTINUE HOME DOMINANCE

The victory extended several notable Alabama streaks.

The Crimson Tide has won 91 consecutive home games against unranked opponents, while DeBoer improved to 16-1 at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Alabama also improved to 70-19-4 all-time in SEC home openers and has won all three of those games under DeBoer.

The 31-point victory represented Alabama's second-largest margin against an SEC opponent during DeBoer's tenure.

And through four games, the Crimson Tide remains unbeaten.

WHAT'S NEXT: ALABAMA HEADS TO MISSISSIPPI STATE

Alabama now takes its perfect record on the road.

The Crimson Tide will make the 90-Mile Drive to face No. 24 Mississippi State on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on ABC.

Russell and Alabama will arrive in Starkville with one of the nation's hottest offenses, a defense generating turnovers and an unbeaten record.

Through four games, the formula has been difficult to stop.
