Wildcats junior posts top-20 showing at The Pelican Golf Club as Kentucky eyes NCAA regional selection
TAMPA, Fla. | In a tournament defined by elite competition and razor-thin margins, Cathryn Brown delivered a performance that turned heads across the Southeastern Conference.
The Kentucky Wildcats women's golf junior and Western Kentucky native carded a career-best finish, tying for 16th place at the SEC Women’s Golf Championship at The Pelican Golf Club. Brown closed with a composed 1-under final round, finishing the 54-hole event at even-par 210—a benchmark performance in one of college golf’s most competitive fields.
While Kentucky posted an 8-over final round to finish 25-over overall (14th place), Brown’s individual consistency stood out as a defining storyline for the Wildcats.
Brown’s Breakthrough Moment
From the opening round to the final putt, Brown led Kentucky’s lineup wire-to-wire, showcasing both poise and precision. Her final-round surge not only secured her top-20 finish but also marked her best performance in three SEC Championship appearances.
The numbers reinforce her consistency:
- 17 rounds of par-or-better this season (out of 31)
- 14 rounds under par
- 35 consecutive rounds counting toward team score, dating back to last season
In a field stacked with nationally ranked programs, Brown proved she belongs among the SEC’s elite.
Wildcats Fall Short of Match Play Cut
Despite Brown’s standout effort, Kentucky fell short of advancing to match play. The cut line for the top eight teams came in at 3-over, highlighting the depth of competition.
Programs advancing included:
- Florida Gators women's golf
- Texas Longhorns women's golf
- Oklahoma Sooners women's golf
- Auburn Tigers women's golf
- Ole Miss Rebels women's golf
- Tennessee Volunteers women's golf
- Texas A&M Aggies women's golf
- Vanderbilt Commodores women's golf
Supporting Cast Shows Grit
Behind Brown, Kentucky saw flashes of resilience throughout the lineup:
- Anastasia Hekkonen delivered a steady final round, opening with 11 consecutive pars en route to a T44 finish (+7)—an 11-shot improvement from last year.
- Raleygh Simpson produced her best round of the week (+2), highlighted by three birdies, finishing T56 (+9).
- C. A. Carter battled early adversity but recovered with three birdies to also finish T56 (+9).
- Karlie Campbell struggled to replicate last year’s form, closing at T74 (+19).
What’s Next: NCAA Selection Looms
With the SEC Championship complete, Kentucky now turns its attention to the postseason.
The Wildcats await the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Selection Show, airing April 29 on the Golf Channel, where the 72-team field for regionals will be unveiled. Those regional events will determine the final qualifiers for the NCAA Championships in Carlsbad, California later this spring.
Bigger Picture: Building Momentum
For Kentucky, the SEC finish may not reflect their ultimate ambitions—but Brown’s emergence signals a program trending upward.
In a conference that routinely produces national contenders, individual breakthroughs like Brown’s can be the difference between rebuilding and contending.
And if her trajectory continues, this may not be the last time her name appears near the top of a leaderboard.
