Freshman Reese Ng leads Wolverines as tightly packed leaderboard keeps title hopes alive at Oakmont Country Club
GLENDALE, Calif. | The Michigan Wolverines women's golf may not have opened atop the leaderboard, but they’re far from out of contention.
After carding a first-round 296 at the 2026 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships, Michigan sits in 12th place — yet remains firmly in the hunt in one of the most tightly contested fields in recent conference history. With just four strokes separating seventh through 12th place, the Wolverines are positioned for a potential surge heading into the weekend.
On a challenging par-70, 6,086-yard layout at Oakmont Country Club, consistency proved key. Freshman Reese Ng paced Michigan with an even-par 73, showcasing composure beyond her years and finishing the day tied for 30th individually.
Veteran leadership followed close behind. Senior Lauren Sung and freshman Jaymie Ng each posted solid rounds of 74, placing them in a tie for 41st. Senior Mara Janess delivered one of the day’s highlights with an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole en route to a 75, while Sydney Sung rounded out the lineup with a 79.
Despite sitting 12th, Michigan is only seven shots out of sixth place — a margin that can be erased quickly in tournament play — and 14 strokes behind early leader USC Trojans women's golf, who set the pace with a 3-under 277. USC’s charge was fueled by standout rounds from Elise Lee, Jasmine Koo, and Catherine Park, each finishing under par and tied for sixth individually.
At the top of the individual leaderboard, Illinois standout Anna Ritter turned in a stellar 5-under 65, setting the early benchmark in a field loaded with top-tier collegiate talent.
For Michigan, the mission is clear: stay aggressive, stay consistent, and capitalize on a leaderboard that remains wide open. With 36 holes still to play, the Wolverines are positioned to climb quickly if they can string together another disciplined round.
The Wolverines return to action Saturday for Round 2, where the course will stretch to 6,134 yards. Michigan will tee off alongside Washington and Iowa at 10:10 a.m. PT, aiming to make a decisive move up the standings as the Big Ten title race intensifies.
