Brooklyn federal prosecutors signal potential plea deals for multiple defendants in an alleged nationwide Mafia-backed poker scheme tied to former NBA players.
NEW YORK | A high-profile federal case tied to former NBA star Chauncey Billups could see significant movement this week as prosecutors say nearly two dozen defendants may accept plea deals in a sweeping investigation into an alleged rigged poker ring linked to organized crime.
Federal prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York informed a federal judge Tuesday that negotiations are underway with numerous defendants charged in the case, which authorities say stretched from Las Vegas to New York and involved a network of rigged high-stakes poker games designed to defraud wealthy participants.
The development comes ahead of a scheduled court appearance on Wednesday in Brooklyn federal court, where all 31 individuals charged in the October indictment are expected to receive an update on the status of the case before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ramon E. Reyes Jr.
Prosecutors Expect Wave of Plea Agreements
In court filings, prosecutors said they anticipate offering formal plea agreements to at least a dozen defendants in the coming days. In addition, the government reported it has engaged in “productive discussions” with lawyers for at least nine more defendants, raising the possibility that nearly two dozen individuals could resolve their cases without going to trial.
Authorities have not disclosed which defendants may accept plea deals, and the legal status of several high-profile figures in the case remains unclear.
Among them is Billups, a former NBA Finals MVP and current NBA head coach, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the plea negotiations.
Alleged Nationwide Rigged Poker Operation
Federal investigators allege the defendants were involved in a sophisticated poker ring that manipulated private games to exploit unsuspecting players. Prosecutors say the operation was backed by organized crime figures associated with the Mafia, who allegedly orchestrated the scheme across multiple cities.
According to the indictment, Billups and former NBA player Damon Jones allegedly served as “lures” to attract wealthy participants to the games. Prosecutors claim the former athletes were paid to use their celebrity status to encourage high-stakes players to join what they believed were legitimate poker games.
Billups and Jones have both denied the allegations and maintain their innocence.
Separate NBA Gambling Conspiracy Emerges
The poker ring case is intertwined with a separate gambling-related indictment involving NBA insider information, further amplifying the legal stakes surrounding the investigation.
That indictment accuses six men of participating in a sports betting conspiracy involving non-public information about NBA players’ health and availability. Prosecutors allege that the confidential information was used to place lucrative bets on player performance.
Among those charged in that case is Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, who appeared in court on Tuesday.
Authorities allege Rozier told a friend that he would exit a March 2023 game early while playing for the Charlotte Hornets, allowing bettors to wager that he would fall short of certain statistical benchmarks.
Rozier and the other defendants in that case have pleaded not guilty.
Next Court Dates and Potential Trial Timeline
While prosecutors push for plea agreements in the poker ring case, the broader gambling conspiracy continues moving through the court system.
Rozier and five co-defendants are scheduled to return to court in mid-May, though a trial date has not yet been set.
Legal analysts say the plea negotiations could significantly reshape the case before it reaches a courtroom.
If multiple defendants accept agreements with prosecutors, the government may secure cooperating witnesses that could strengthen its case against those who choose to fight the charges at trial.
For now, the upcoming Brooklyn court hearing could mark a turning point in one of the most unusual intersections of professional sports, organized crime, and gambling allegations in recent years.
