Brooklyn federal prosecutors signal potential plea deals for multiple defendants in an alleged nationwide Mafia-backed poker scheme tied to former NBA players.
NEW YORK | A high-profile federal case tied to former NBA star Chauncey Billups could see significant movement this week as prosecutors say nearly two dozen defendants may accept plea deals in a sweeping investigation into an alleged rigged poker ring linked to organized crime.
Federal prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York informed a federal judge Tuesday that negotiations are underway with numerous defendants charged in the case, which authorities say stretched from Las Vegas to New York and involved a network of rigged high-stakes poker games designed to defraud wealthy participants.
The development comes ahead of a scheduled court appearance on Wednesday in Brooklyn federal court, where all 31 individuals charged in the October indictment are expected to receive an update on the status of the case before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ramon E. Reyes Jr.
