Texas Men’s Golf Defeats Texas A&M To Win Jackson T. Stephens Cup

Derbez Torres, Bennett and freshman Harper deliver match-play victories as No. 12 Longhorns claim first team championship of 2026-27 season

FRISCO, Texas | Texas men’s golf turned a commanding stroke-play performance into a championship Wednesday, defeating in-state rival Texas A&M 3-1 in the title match of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at PGA Frisco Fields Ranch East.

The No. 12 Longhorns received victories from juniors Eduardo Derbez Torres and Daniel Bennett and freshman Brooks Harper, whose 4-and-3 win over Wheaton Ennis delivered the championship-clinching point.

The victory gave Texas its first team title of the 2026-27 season and completed a tournament in which the Longhorns controlled both formats. Texas entered match play as the No. 1 seed after finishing the 54-hole stroke-play portion of the tournament with a 21-stroke advantage.

Bennett and fifth-year senior Matt Comegys also shared individual co-medalist honors after each finished stroke play at 9-under 207.

Derbez Torres puts Texas in front

Derbez Torres delivered the Longhorns' first point with a 4-and-2 victory over Texas A&M's Kris Kuvaas.

The match remained tied through the first three holes before Derbez Torres won No. 4 to take the lead. He remained 1-up until winning the 12th and then took control late, capturing Nos. 15 and 16 to close the match.

Texas A&M answered through Landon Ashcraft, who defeated sophomore Adam Villanueva 6 and 4.

Ashcraft won the opening hole and steadily expanded his advantage, taking Nos. 5, 7 and 8 to move 4-up through eight. Wins at Nos. 13 and 14 ended the match and tied the overall championship at 1-1.

Bennett delivers on the 18th

With the championship still in play, Bennett produced one of Texas' biggest shots of the tournament.

His match against Aaron Pounds reached the 18th hole all square after several momentum swings.

Bennett won the opening hole before Pounds tied the match at No. 7 and moved ahead with a win on the 10th. Bennett responded by winning three consecutive holes — Nos. 11, 12 and 13 — to build a 2-up advantage.

Pounds fought back, winning Nos. 14 and 16 to bring the match level again.

After the players halved the 17th, Bennett made birdie on No. 18 to secure a 1-up victory and put Texas ahead 2-1.

The performance capped a notable tournament for Bennett, who had already earned a share of medalist honors during stroke play.

Harper clinches championship for Longhorns

Harper made sure Texas would not need to wait much longer.

The freshman jumped on Ennis early, winning Nos. 1, 3 and 5 to establish a 3-up advantage. Ennis cut into the margin at the sixth, but Harper responded by winning Nos. 9 and 10 to stretch his lead to 4-up.

After the two traded holes later in the match, Harper reached the 15th with an opportunity
