Manya Saini Earns Sun Belt Women’s Golfer of the Week Honors After Career-Best Finish

Troy standout opens the season with a 1-under performance at the Golfweek Fall Challenge, firing a 5-under 66 and leading the field with 12 birdies.

TROY, Ala. |
Manya Saini wasted little time making an impact in Troy’s new women’s golf season.

The fourth-year Trojan was named the season’s first Sun Belt Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week after shooting 1-under and recording a career-best fourth-place finish at the Golfweek Fall Challenge, the league announced Friday.

Saini’s season-opening performance was highlighted by a blistering 5-under 66 in the first round and a tournament-leading 12 birdies. The Ahmedabad, India, native entered the 54th and final hole tied for the individual lead before ultimately finishing fourth.

For Saini, the showing continued a strong stretch of golf dating to last season and provided Troy with an early individual highlight as the Trojans begin their fall schedule.

Saini Opens Season With 5-Under 66

Saini immediately put herself in contention with one of the strongest rounds of her collegiate career.

Her opening-round 66 marked her third under-par round over a five-round stretch extending back to last season.

Rather than fading after the fast start, Saini remained in contention throughout the 54-hole tournament. She reached the final hole with a share of the individual lead, giving herself an opportunity to contend for the title before settling for fourth place — the best individual finish of her Troy career.

Saini finished the tournament at 1-under overall.

Her ability to create scoring opportunities was particularly evident on the scorecard. Saini recorded 12 birdies, the most of any player in the field.

She also played both par 4s and par 5s below par for the tournament, finishing 1-under on the par 4s and 2-under on the par 5s.

That combination of birdie production and consistency helped keep Saini near the top of the leaderboard from the opening round through the final hole.

Sun Belt Honors Saini’s Season-Opening Performance

The Sun Belt Conference recognition gives Saini the league’s first Women’s Golfer of the Week award of the season.

It also provides an encouraging start for a veteran player entering an important year with the Trojans.

Saini’s experience could prove valuable for Troy as the fall schedule progresses. Her opening performance showed both the scoring potential to contend individually and the consistency needed to contribute to the Trojans’ team results.

The fourth-place finish also established a new personal benchmark.

After beginning the tournament with a 66, Saini remained close enough to the lead to enter the final hole with an opportunity to win — an indication of how effectively she managed the tournament after her opening-round surge.

Troy Turns Attention to Pirate Collegiate Classic

There will not be much downtime for Saini and the Trojans.

Troy returns to competition Monday and Tuesday at the Pirate Collegiate Classic, where Saini will attempt to build on one of the strongest performances of her collegiate career.

The challenge now becomes carrying that momentum into the next tournament.

For Troy, having its fourth-year standout begin the season with a top-five finish and conference recognition provides an immediate boost.

For Saini, the Golfweek Fall Challenge offered something more: evidence that she can put herself in position to compete for tournament championships.

After coming within one hole of potentially capturing her first individual title, her next opportunity is already approaching.

And following a 5-under opening round, 12 birdies, a career-best fourth-place finish and the Sun Belt’s first weekly honor of the season, Saini heads into it with momentum firmly on her side.
