Autonomous vessel manufacturer selects Brownsville for next-generation shipyard capable of producing large unmanned warships as the U.S. races to rebuild maritime industrial capacity and counter China's shipbuilding dominance.
BROWNSVILLE, Texas | Defense technology company Saronic has announced plans to build Port Alpha, a $3 billion next-generation shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, marking one of the largest private investments in America's defense-industrial maritime sector in decades.
The project positions Texas at the center of the Pentagon's rapidly expanding autonomous naval strategy while reinforcing broader federal efforts to rebuild U.S. shipbuilding capacity amid increasing strategic competition with China.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the facility scheduled to become operational in 2028.
A New Generation of American Shipbuilding
Founded in 2022, Saronic has quickly emerged as one of the nation's fastest-growing autonomous maritime technology firms.
Port Alpha will begin with an 835-acre campus in Cameron County while preserving room to expand to nearly 4,400 acres, making it one of the largest modern shipbuilding complexes in North America.
According to Saronic, the initial facility will be capable of constructing vessels up to 850 feet long, comparable in size to the U.S. Navy's Wasp-class amphibious assault ships.
Future expansion could support ships exceeding 1,200 feet in length, dramatically increasing production capacity for both military and commercial platforms.
Chief Executive Officer Dino Mavrookas described the project as an investment in America's long-term maritime competitiveness.
"America's maritime future depends on our ability to build again."
Autonomous Warships at the Center of the Strategy
Although Saronic has not identified which vessels will ultimately be built at Port Alpha, company leadership indicated autonomy will increasingly define future naval platforms.
Rather than focusing solely on today's unmanned surface vessels, executives envision progressively integrating autonomous technologies into increasingly larger ships.
According to Mavrookas, future vessels may initially operate with crews before transitioning toward greater autonomy as technology and regulations evolve.
The announcement comes as the U.S. Navy continues investing heavily in unmanned maritime systems designed for:
- Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance
- Maritime security
- Logistics
- Distributed naval operations
- Long-range strike missions
- Fleet support
Combat-Proven Corsair Draws Attention
Port Alpha's announcement follows a series of high-profile operational milestones for Saronic's Corsair unmanned surface vessel.
Earlier this month, U.S. Central Command announced that Corsair drones participated in operations targeting Iran's Bandar Abbas Naval Base, describing the mission as the first combat employment of American unmanned surface vessels.
In a separate operation, a Navy-operated Corsair assisted in rescuing two U.S. Army soldiers after an AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed near the Strait of Hormuz, another first for autonomous maritime systems.
Those missions have accelerated interest in unmanned naval technologies as military planners expand operational concepts across multiple theaters.
Economic Impact Could Reshape South Texas
State and local leaders expect the project to become one of the largest economic development initiatives in South Texas.
Saronic estimates Port Alpha could generate:
- Up to 10,000 direct jobs
- Approximately $750 million annually in wages
- $264.5 billion in statewide economic activity
- $160 billion in economic impact for Cameron County
Employment opportunities are expected to include:
- Welders
- Naval architects
- Robotics specialists
- Software engineers
- Manufacturing technicians
- Machinists
The company also plans to establish apprenticeship and workforce training partnerships with Texas schools and local educational institutions.
Texas Offers Major Incentives
Texas secured the project after competing against multiple states, including California and Virginia.
To attract the investment, the state approved an $80 million grant through the Texas Enterprise Fund.
Meanwhile, Cameron County commissioners approved a 95% property tax abatement spanning approximately two decades.
The agreement requires Saronic to fill at least 35% of positions with local residents, with incentive reductions if hiring benchmarks are not met.
While local officials largely celebrated the announcement, several community members questioned the need to provide tax incentives to a privately held defense company reportedly valued at more than $9 billion.
Supporting America's Maritime Revival
Port Alpha aligns with a broader federal strategy aimed at reversing decades of decline in U.S. shipbuilding.
The project complements recent national initiatives, including:
- Executive Order on Maritime Dominance
- SHIPS for America Act
- Federal Maritime Action Plan
Each initiative seeks to strengthen domestic ship production while reducing dependence on foreign industrial capacity.
Defense analysts increasingly view shipbuilding as one of the most critical long-term strategic competitions between the United States and China.
Navy Competition Continues
Saronic's expansion also coincides with the company's participation in the Navy's highly competitive Medium Unmanned Surface Vessel (MUSV) acquisition program.
The company remains one of seven finalists advancing through operational testing expected to continue into October.
If selected, Port Alpha could become a major production center supporting future Navy autonomous fleet modernization efforts while significantly expanding America's ability to manufacture next-generation naval platforms at scale.
