Attack on U.S. and partner forces marks another deadly escalation in the conflict with Iran as Central Command reports two service members killed in action, one missing, and multiple casualties evacuated.
WASHINGTON | Two U.S. service members were killed in action, and another remains missing after Iranian ballistic missiles and drones struck U.S. and partner forces in Jordan on July 17, according to the latest statement from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM said the service members were defending against coordinated Iranian missile and drone attacks when the casualties occurred. Four additional U.S. service members were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan but have since been released after treatment. Personnel treated for minor injuries have returned to duty.
Investigation Continues
CENTCOM has not publicly identified the specific installation struck during the attack or released additional operational details while investigations continue. Multiple news organizations have reported that the strike targeted a U.S.-used military facility in Jordan, though the military has not officially confirmed the location.
The attack involved both ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial systems, underscoring Iran's continued use of layered strike capabilities against U.S. positions in the region.
Growing Cost of the Conflict
According to current military reporting, the latest fatalities raise the number of American service members killed during the ongoing conflict with Iran to 16. More than 400 U.S. personnel have been wounded since hostilities intensified earlier this year.
Among the recent losses was Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, who died on July 1 after the MH-60S Seahawk helicopter in which he was flying crashed into the Arabian Sea. Three additional sailors survived that incident.
Regional Security Concerns Intensify
The attack highlights the persistent risks facing U.S. forces stationed throughout the Middle East as American and coalition personnel continue operations in support of regional security and force protection missions.
Military analysts note that Jordan hosts several facilities that support U.S. operations across the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, making it a strategically important location amid heightened regional tensions.
The strike also illustrates Iran's continued use of combined missile and drone attacks, a tactic designed to complicate air and missile defense operations by presenting multiple simultaneous threats.
CENTCOM Continues Force Protection Operations
CENTCOM emphasized that U.S. and partner forces were actively defending against the incoming attack when the casualties occurred. Officials have not announced whether additional defensive measures or force posture adjustments will follow.
The command indicated it will release further information as operational security permits and after family notifications have been completed.
