Veteran Golf Association Members Battle Alabama Heat to Finish Strong at RTJ Highlands; Flight Champions Crowned Across Multiple Divisions
DOTHAN, Ala. | The final round of the Veteran Golf Association (VGA) South Region tournament at RTJ at The Highlands delivered another day of competitive golf as players battled soaring temperatures on the Marshwood-to-Magnolia course Sunday.
Despite the sweltering Alabama heat, 44 VGA members gathered before teeing off for one final group photo with Dothan's iconic Peanut statue, highlighting the camaraderie that has become synonymous with the Veteran Golf Association's mission of bringing veterans, military families, and supporters together through the game of golf.
As temperatures climbed throughout the afternoon, golfers navigated demanding course conditions while competing for flight championships across multiple divisions. The event concluded another successful weekend of competition at Alabama's renowned Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail facility.
Among the day's standout performances, Vernon Kwiatkowski (USAF) of Navarre, Florida, captured the Veteran B Flight with an impressive 80, while Ben Salter (USAF) of Evergreen, Alabama, claimed the Veteran C Flight title with an 85.
The No Handicap Flight was won by George Enslow (USAF) of Tallahassee, Florida, who carded a 105, while Ross Morrison (USA) of Enterprise, Alabama, led the Senior divisions by winning Senior A with a score of 79.
Several handicap-adjusted divisions produced exceptional results. Todd Hotard (USA) of Gonzales, Louisiana, earned the Veteran D Flight championship with a gross score of 95 and a net 74. James Hopper (USA) of Leeds, Alabama, captured the Wounded Veteran D Flight after posting an 84 gross and an outstanding 66 net, one of the tournament's strongest adjusted performances.
In the women's divisions, Robyn Pierce (USN) of Pace, Florida, won Female Veteran C with a 93, while Kari Bittinger (USAF) of Crestview, Florida, secured Female Veteran D with an 88 gross and 65 net. Kim Moehler (USAF) of Pace, Florida, claimed the Female Family Flight after shooting 84 gross and 74 net, while Alisa Fabela (USA) of Newton, Alabama, earned the Female Senior title with a 107 gross and 75 net.
Family division champions included Matt Hopper (USA) of Leeds, Alabama, who won Family with a 94, and Malcolm Calhoun (USA) of Montgomery, Alabama, who captured Family B after posting an 87.
The Senior divisions also featured strong play from Timothy Brown (USA) of Ozark, Alabama, who won Senior B with an 83 gross and 70 net, and Derrick Percival (USAF) of Wetumpka, Alabama, who claimed Senior C after recording an 84 gross and 68 net.
The day's Closest-to-the-Pin competitions recognized three standout shots:
- Hole No. 4: Alisa Fabela
- Hole No. 8 David McCoy
- Hole No. 11: Mario Fabela
Tournament organizers also extended appreciation to **Kayla, Susan, and Chris** for their work in helping coordinate another successful VGA event.
The weekend in Dothan once again showcased what separates the Veteran Golf Association from traditional amateur tournaments. While competition remains fierce, the organization's mission extends beyond scorecards by fostering fellowship, supporting veterans and military families, and building lifelong friendships through golf.
