Polish Defense Minister Says Washington Responded Favorably to Proposal Amid Growing Security Concerns Over Russia and Ongoing War in Ukraine
BRUSSELS | The Pentagon is reportedly open to considering a permanent U.S. military base in Poland, a development that could significantly reshape NATO’s eastern flank and deepen U.S.-Polish defense cooperation as the alliance confronts heightened security challenges posed by Russia.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said Thursday that discussions with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in Brussels produced a positive response to Warsaw’s long-standing proposal for a permanent American military presence on Polish soil.
“The U.S. responded positively to Poland’s proposal to establish a permanent U.S. military base in Poland,” Kosiniak-Kamysz told reporters following meetings held alongside NATO defense consultations. He cautioned, however, that no final decision has been made and discussions remain ongoing.
The remarks come as Poland continues to position itself as one of NATO’s most committed defense partners, dramatically increasing military spending and expanding its armed forces since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Strategic Shift on NATO’s Eastern Flank
For years, Poland has advocated for a stronger and more permanent allied presence along NATO’s eastern border, arguing that Russia’s military aggression demonstrates the need for enhanced deterrence and forward defense.
The United States currently maintains thousands of troops in Poland through rotational deployments, training missions, logistics hubs, and command elements. A permanent installation would represent a significant evolution in U.S. force posture in Europe and could become one of the most consequential NATO basing decisions since the end of the Cold War.
Military analysts say a permanent base could improve operational readiness, strengthen deterrence against Russian aggression, and provide enhanced support for NATO forces operating across Eastern Europe.
Such a move would also further cement Poland’s role as a key logistics and security hub supporting Ukraine and broader alliance operations.
Pentagon Reviewing European Force Posture
The discussion coincides with a broader Pentagon review of U.S. troop deployments across Europe announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Speaking Thursday, Hegseth indicated that the Department of Defense is reassessing force distribution, readiness requirements, and alliance burden-sharing responsibilities as part of a comprehensive review of America's overseas military posture.
The review comes amid ongoing debate within Washington regarding the future size and structure of the U.S. military presence in Europe.
Defense officials have emphasized that any future basing decisions will be guided by strategic requirements, operational effectiveness, alliance commitments, and evolving security threats.
NATO Burden-Sharing Under Renewed Scrutiny
Hegseth also warned that some NATO members must continue increasing defense spending or risk growing tensions over alliance contributions.
The secretary reiterated concerns about "free riding" among allies that fail to meet NATO defense spending benchmarks, a longstanding issue that has resurfaced amid growing security demands and rising military expenditures across Europe.
Poland has emerged as one of NATO's highest defense spenders as a percentage of gross domestic product, investing heavily in advanced U.S.-made military equipment, including Abrams tanks, Patriot air defense systems, HIMARS rocket launchers, F-35 fighter aircraft, and Apache attack helicopters.
Warsaw's significant defense investments have strengthened its position as one of Washington's closest security partners in Europe and may bolster its case for hosting a permanent U.S. military installation.
Implications for Russia and Regional Security
Any decision to establish a permanent U.S. base in Poland would likely draw close scrutiny from Moscow, which has consistently criticized NATO's military expansion near Russian borders.
Since the outbreak of the Ukraine war, however, NATO has significantly reinforced its eastern flank, deploying additional troops, air defense assets, and command structures throughout Eastern Europe.
Security experts note that a permanent American base could serve as a powerful symbol of U.S. commitment to collective defense under Article 5 while enhancing NATO's ability to rapidly respond to regional crises.
For Poland, the proposal represents both a strategic security objective and a signal that Washington remains committed to long-term deterrence efforts in Europe despite shifting global security priorities.
While negotiations remain in the early stages, Thursday's discussions suggest the concept of a permanent U.S. military presence in Poland is receiving serious consideration at the highest levels of the Pentagon, potentially setting the stage for a major shift in NATO force posture in the years ahead.
