Veteran airport safety leader and Certified Member in airport management becomes the eighth executive director in Montgomery Regional Airport history as officials position MGM for long-term regional growth.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTLS) | The Montgomery Airport Authority has appointed Loyd Jenkins as the new Executive Director of Montgomery Regional Airport, marking a significant leadership transition as the airport continues major infrastructure improvements and strategic expansion initiatives.
Jenkins, who has most recently served as Airport Police Chief at Montgomery Regional Airport since 2022, becomes the eighth executive director in the airport’s history. Airport officials announced the appointment on Friday, describing Jenkins as a proven leader with deep aviation expertise and strong ties to the Montgomery community.
“We are confident that Loyd’s leadership, industry expertise, and strong ties to the community will guide Montgomery Regional Airport into its next phase of growth,” said Robert Gould, Chairman of the Montgomery Airport Authority Board.
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Montgomery Regional Airport, which has been advancing multiple modernization efforts to enhance the passenger experience, strengthen regional connectivity, and support economic development across Central Alabama. Ongoing projects include terminal upgrades, infrastructure improvements, operational modernization, and expanded business development initiatives tied to growth in commercial air service.
Jenkins’ background in airport operations and public safety is expected to play a key role as airports nationwide face increasing pressure to balance security, operational efficiency, and customer experience. During his tenure as Airport Police Chief, Jenkins led safety and security operations at MGM while coordinating with local, regional, and federal partners on aviation security and emergency preparedness initiatives.
Industry leaders also highlighted Jenkins’ recent achievement of earning the Certified Member (CM) designation, an internationally recognized credential in airport management that reflects advanced knowledge, executive leadership capability, and professional commitment within the aviation industry.
The leadership transition reflects a broader trend across regional airports nationwide, where aviation authorities are increasingly selecting operational leaders with direct airport management experience and community engagement backgrounds to navigate evolving travel demands and infrastructure challenges.
“I am honored to serve as Executive Director of Montgomery Regional Airport,” Jenkins said in a statement. “This airport plays a critical role in connecting our community, and I look forward to working alongside our dedicated team, partners, and stakeholders to continue elevating the travel experience and driving growth for the region.”
Montgomery Regional Airport has continued to position itself as an important transportation and economic gateway for Alabama’s capital region. Airport leaders have emphasized the importance of route development, terminal modernization, tourism partnerships, and business recruitment as competition intensifies among mid-sized regional airports across the Southeast.
The appointment also comes at a time of renewed momentum for the airport, with increased focus on passenger growth, infrastructure investment, and airline partnerships to improve regional air connectivity.
Economic development officials have increasingly cited Montgomery Regional Airport as a strategic asset that supports business expansion, military connectivity, tourism growth, and broader regional competitiveness throughout the River Region.
With Jenkins now assuming executive leadership, airport stakeholders say the focus will remain on operational excellence, strategic modernization, and positioning Montgomery Regional Airport for sustained long-term growth in an increasingly competitive aviation environment.
