‘TELL IT LIKE IT IS’ On The Plains: Holland Barnett’s Auburn Journey Defined by Growth, Grit, and Lasting Legacy

From a childhood spark in Kentucky to senior leadership at Auburn, Barnett reflects on a transformative equestrian career and a future rooted in purpose.

AUBURN, Ala. | For Holland Barnett, the road to Auburn wasn’t paved by tradition—it was sparked by curiosity. What began as a five-year-old watching friends ride horses in Lexington, Kentucky, evolved into a lifelong passion that would carry her to the national stage as a key contributor to Auburn’s equestrian program.

Now a senior and standout Jumping Seat rider, Barnett is embracing the final chapter of her collegiate career with a mix of pride, gratitude, and reflection—hallmarks of an athlete who has grown far beyond the arena.

“My friends started riding, so I started doing it, and all of a sudden I just loved it,” Barnett said. “I’ve done it my whole life ever since.”

Ironically, her first steps into equestrian weren’t even in the discipline she now excels in.

“My first lesson was Western,” she recalled. “After a couple of lessons, I changed disciplines to Jumping Seat and loved it.”

That early willingness to adapt became a defining trait throughout her Auburn career. Over four years, Barnett developed into not only a dependable competitor but also a respected leader within a program known for its national pedigree.

“Being on this team has made me grow as a person,” Barnett said. “It has made me mature. Being a senior has definitely taught me leadership skills. I feel like I’ve become someone people can come to.”

Her growth has been shaped by Auburn’s coaching staff, whom she credits for guiding her through both triumphs and challenges.

“All of my coaches have helped me,” she said. “I’ve grown closer to them each year. They’ve always been there to give advice and support.”

Beyond competition, Barnett found something just as meaningful in Auburn—a sense of belonging.

“I love Auburn—it feels very homey,” she said. “The people here are awesome. I love the traditions, like Toomer’s Corner, and going to football games. I would love to live here after graduation.”

That sentiment is especially notable considering her early aspirations to remain in her home state.

“Being from Kentucky, I always thought I would go to the University of Kentucky,” Barnett said. “But they didn’t have a riding team. When I found Auburn, it just stood out.”

And the rest, as they say, is history.

One of Barnett’s most defining moments came not in competition but in adversity. After suffering an injury during her sophomore season that kept her from traveling to the SEC Championships, she found strength in her teammates’ success—and in Auburn’s tradition.

“When the team came back, and we celebrated at Toomer’s Corner, I felt like I had been there the whole time,” she said. “I felt really happy and supported.”

As her collegiate career winds down, Barnett admits the emotions are impossible to ignore.

“I’m very excited, but also very sad,” she said. “These are some of my last meets, but I’m excited to just be with my teammates and have fun.”

Those teammates, she says, are what she’ll miss most.

“They’re my family,” Barnett said. “I’ve grown up with them, and I’m going to miss them so much.”

Looking ahead, Barnett plans to channel the lessons she’s learned into a career in counseling—a path inspired by her own personal experiences.

“I’ve gone to therapy for most of my life, and I think it’s very interesting,” she said. “That’s something I want to pursue.”

It’s a fitting next step for someone who has spent years developing not only physical precision but emotional resilience—qualities that define both elite athletes and impactful leaders.

As Auburn prepares for postseason competition, Barnett’s legacy is already secure. Her journey—from a curious child in Kentucky to a senior leader on the Plains—reflects the essence of college athletics: growth, connection, and purpose.

“This team has helped me figure out who I am,” she said. “I don’t know exactly what’s next, but I know I’m on the right path.”

And as Holland Barnett takes her final rides for Auburn, she does so not just as a competitor, but as a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and finding your place.
