Germany's Bundeswehr warns that suspected Russian drone operations could target military bases, personnel and critical defense infrastructure as Berlin strengthens security measures amid escalating tensions over Ukraine.
BERLIN | Germany's military has elevated its assessment of the threat of Russian sabotage to its second-highest level, warning that German military personnel, installations and defense infrastructure could face direct attacks as concerns grow over Moscow's suspected covert operations across Europe.
The Bundeswehr now considers the sabotage threat "substantial," according to a classified military assessment reported Wednesday by German public broadcaster WDR and newspaper SΓΌddeutsche Zeitung. The warning marks a significant expansion of security concerns previously focused on facilities supporting Ukrainian military training and equipment deliveries.
German military officials now believe potential attacks could occur across a wider range of locations, making it increasingly difficult to identify specific installations most at risk.
The assessment suggests Russia possesses the capability and growing motivation to target German military facilities and Ukrainian personnel operating in Germany, raising concerns that Moscow's campaign of suspected hybrid warfare could escalate into attacks causing physical destruction or casualties.
