Veteran aviation operations leader will make history as the first African American woman — and first woman — to hold the position at Craig Field Airport & Industrial Authority
SELMA, Ala. | Craig Field Airport & Industrial Authority has named veteran aviation operations professional Myiesha Johnson as its new deputy director of airport operations and tenant leasing, a leadership appointment the authority says marks two historic firsts for the Selma aviation and industrial complex.
Johnson will officially begin her new role Monday, Oct. 5, 2026. According to the authority, she will become the first African American woman and the first woman to serve in the position.
The appointment brings an aviation professional with more than a decade of progressive airport experience to Craig Field as the authority works to strengthen its aviation operations, tenant relationships and long-term economic development efforts.
As deputy director, Johnson will oversee airfield operations, regulatory compliance, tenant relations and strategic development initiatives supporting Craig Field's aviation and industrial operations.
Johnson comes to Craig Field from Montgomery Regional Airport, where she served as airport operations supervisor beginning in April 2022. She directed daily airfield and terminal operations, worked to maintain compliance with Federal Aviation Administration Part 139 and Transportation Security Administration requirements, and led personnel responsible for safe and efficient airport operations.
Her career also includes leadership positions with the Mobile Airport Authority, where she served as an airport operations supervisor and Airport Operations Specialist II. Her responsibilities included safety and security programs, employee training and operational compliance across Mobile's three airports.
A Wetumpka, Alabama, native, Johnson began her aviation career in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
She worked as a communications specialist in the Airport Operations Center at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, supporting emergency response coordination, airfield communications and operational continuity.
In 2019, Johnson moved into airfield operations at Dallas Love Field, serving as an airfield operations officer in one of the nation's major commercial aviation markets.
Her experience across Dallas Fort Worth International, Dallas Love Field, the Mobile Airport Authority and Montgomery Regional Airport provides Craig Field with a senior operations leader whose background spans airfield safety, regulatory compliance, emergency coordination, terminal operations and personnel management.
The addition also expands Craig Field's executive leadership capacity at a time when the Airport & Industrial Authority is pursuing opportunities to strengthen aviation activity, tenant development and the broader industrial footprint surrounding the former military airfield.
Johnson's tenant-leasing responsibilities will place her in a key role working with existing and prospective businesses while coordinating operational requirements associated with activity on the airfield.
Her appointment also represents a notable milestone for the organization. The authority identifies Johnson as both the first woman and first African American woman to hold the deputy director of airport operations and tenant leasing position.
Johnson's background in both large commercial airport environments and regional aviation operations is expected to support Craig Field's continued focus on safety, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency and development.
She assumes the position Oct. 5.
