Former Big West Defensive Player of the Year Hayden Gray rejoins Boston after making his NBA debut with Utah, giving the Celtics another defensive-minded guard competing for a roster opportunity.
BOSTON | Former UC San Diego standout Hayden Gray has signed with the Boston Celtics ahead of training camp, returning to the organization where he spent most of his rookie professional season with the Maine Celtics of the NBA G League.
The move gives Gray another opportunity to establish himself in the NBA after the San Diego native made his league debut with the Utah Jazz late in the 2025-26 season. Reports this week described Gray's Boston agreement as a pre-training camp or training camp deal.
Gray's return also continues a rapid climb for the former UC San Diego guard, who went from one of college basketball's premier perimeter defenders to the G League and then the NBA in little more than a year.
Gray spent most of last season with Maine, appearing in 48 games with 23 starts. He averaged 9.9 points, 5.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 steals in 27.9 minutes per game while recording eight double-doubles and four 20-point performances.
His play with Maine ultimately led to an NBA opportunity with Utah. The Jazz signed Gray to a two-year contract in April after his G League season with Boston's affiliate.
Gray made his NBA debut April 12 against the Los Angeles Lakers in Los Angeles, scoring six points while adding an assist, a steal and a blocked shot. He played 24 minutes as Utah closed its season against the Lakers.
Now, Gray is back in the Celtics organization with a chance to turn that late-season NBA experience into a longer stay.
The 6-foot-4 guard's defensive production remains a central part of his profile. In his final season at UC San Diego, Gray was named the 2025 Big West Defensive Player of the Year and finished as a finalist for the Naismith Men's Defensive Player of the Year award.
Gray led NCAA Division I with 110 steals during the 2024-25 season, establishing himself as one of the nation's most disruptive defenders before beginning his professional career.
His ability to pressure ballhandlers, create turnovers and contribute as a playmaker helped make him an intriguing developmental prospect despite going undrafted.
Boston is bringing Gray into a competitive training camp environment. Recent reports indicate the Celtics also added guard Devin Carter as the organization evaluates players for remaining roster opportunities.
For Gray, the familiarity with Boston's system could be valuable. He already has extensive experience with Maine and now returns with NBA game experience that he did not have during his first stint in the organization.
The signing does not guarantee Gray a regular-season roster position. His performance during training camp and the preseason will help determine whether he remains with Boston, earns another opportunity with Maine or takes another path as the Celtics finalize their roster.
What is already established is Gray's progression: from UC San Diego's defensive leader, to a full G League season, to an NBA debut and now another opportunity with one of the league's most prominent organizations.
Boston's preseason will provide Gray his next chance to make his case.
