AUBURN, Ala. | Alabama soccer opened Southeastern Conference play by extending its hold on one of the program’s most important rivalry trophies.
Kennedy Garcia scored in the 33rd minute and goalkeeper Madi Munguia made five saves as Alabama shut out previously unbeaten Auburn 1-0 Friday night, sending the Iron Bowl of Soccer trophy back to Tuscaloosa for a seventh consecutive season.
Alabama improved to 8-1 overall and opened SEC competition with a victory, while Auburn fell to 4-1-3 with its first loss of the season.
The Crimson Tide is now 6-0-1 over its past seven Iron Bowl contests against Auburn, a stretch that includes three road victories and four shutouts.
For Alabama coach Wes Hart, the victory offered another example of a team capable of finding a path to a result even when it does not control every phase of the match.
“What I’ve said about our team all along is that we find ways to win,” Hart said. “I don’t think it was a great start to the game. Auburn probably had a little more control than us in the first half although we got the goal.”
By the final whistle, that one goal was all Alabama needed.

Auburn’s goalkeeper punched away an Alabama opportunity, but the clearance produced a rebound that Garcia converted to give the Crimson Tide a 1-0 advantage.
The goal carried several career milestones for Garcia.
It was her third goal of the season, her first goal in SEC competition and the first game-winning goal of her Alabama career.
In a rivalry often defined by narrow margins, Garcia’s finish proved enough to decide the night.
Auburn entered the match without a loss through its first seven games and applied pressure during portions of the opening half. Alabama, however, survived those stretches and capitalized when its opportunity arrived.
Madi Munguia Makes Five Saves to Preserve Shutout
Garcia provided the offense. Munguia ensured Alabama did not need any more of it.
The Crimson Tide goalkeeper finished with five saves, matching her season high while recording her fifth clean sheet of the year.
Her performance was particularly important considering Auburn’s stronger spells during the opening half.
Once Alabama went ahead, Munguia and the Crimson Tide defense protected the advantage and prevented the Tigers from finding an equalizer.
The result added another shutout to Alabama’s recent dominance in the rivalry.
Four of the Crimson Tide’s past seven Iron Bowl meetings with Auburn have ended with Alabama keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard.
Crimson Tide Takes Control After Halftime
Hart acknowledged that Auburn had the better of some stretches before halftime.
The second half told a different story.
“In the second half we turned the game and had a lot of possession and a lot of chances,” Hart said. “It was a well-deserved win on our part.”
Alabama’s ability to gain more possession after halftime reduced Auburn’s opportunities to chase an equalizer and allowed the Crimson Tide to dictate larger portions of the match.
That adjustment proved particularly valuable on the road in the SEC opener, where protecting a one-goal advantage for more than a half required discipline as much as attacking ambition.
Alabama never found an insurance goal.
It never needed one.
Alabama Continues Recent Iron Bowl of Soccer Dominance
Friday’s victory further strengthened an impressive stretch for the Crimson Tide against its in-state rival.
Alabama is 6-0-1 in the past seven Iron Bowl contests, excluding the spring 2021 meeting that did not count toward the rivalry series.
The streak has now resulted in Alabama taking home the Iron Bowl of Soccer trophy for seven consecutive seasons.
“For the seventh year in a row, we’re taking the trophy home with us and I’m super proud of the girls,” Hart said. “They battled and competed hard tonight.”
The victory carries additional significance because it came in Auburn.
Winning SEC matches on the road can become crucial as teams build their conference rΓ©sumΓ©s, and Alabama left its first league test with three points, a clean sheet and possession of its rivalry trophy.
Alabama Improves to 8-1 With SEC Schedule Underway
At 8-1, the Crimson Tide has built considerable early-season momentum as the competition shifts fully into conference play.
Friday’s performance also demonstrated multiple ways Alabama can win.
Garcia provided a timely finish. Munguia delivered when Auburn tested the goal. The Crimson Tide weathered an uneven opening before controlling more of the match after halftime.
That formula proved enough to defeat an Auburn team that had not lost this season.
Now Alabama must carry the performance beyond the emotion of the Iron Bowl.
The SEC schedule offers little opportunity to linger on rivalry victories.
Arkansas Awaits Alabama in Tuscaloosa
Alabama returns home Friday, Sept. 18, to face Arkansas at 7 p.m. Central in Tuscaloosa.
The matchup gives the Crimson Tide another SEC test and an opportunity to build on a conference-opening road victory.
For now, however, Alabama can celebrate a familiar sight.
The Iron Bowl of Soccer trophy is heading back to Tuscaloosa.
For the seventh consecutive season.
