San Diego State enters Sunday’s matchup at 1-1 after pushing No. 10 Washington in a defensive battle, while Portland State searches for its first victory of the 2026 season.
Now, the Aztecs have an opportunity to turn those early flashes into momentum.
San Diego State (1-1) hosts Portland State (0-3) Sunday at 3 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck, as the Aztecs look to bounce back from a narrow loss to No. 10 Washington and secure their second victory of the young season.

For San Diego State, Sunday's match offers an opportunity to build on an encouraging opening stretch in which the Aztecs have demonstrated an ability to create scoring chances while limiting opponents defensively.
Aztecs Open 2026 With Statement Shutout
SDSU opened its season in impressive fashion with a 2-0 road victory over UC San Diego, getting contributions on both ends of the field.
Kenny Moore provided the first breakthrough in the 22nd minute with a highlight-worthy goal that gave San Diego State the early advantage.
The Aztecs carried that lead into halftime before Victoria Miller doubled the margin in the 55th minute, giving SDSU the breathing room it needed to control the remainder of the match.
At the other end of the field, goalkeeper Kailey Carlen delivered a strong season debut.
Carlen recorded four saves and kept UC San Diego off the scoreboard, securing the clean sheet. Her performance earned her Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors and provided an early indication that the goalkeeper position could be a strength for San Diego State this season.
That defensive foundation became even more important when SDSU returned home to face one of the nation's top teams.
No. 10 Washington Gives SDSU an Early Test
Wednesday's meeting with No. 10 Washington offered a significantly different challenge.
Instead of being overwhelmed by the nationally ranked Huskies, San Diego State turned the matchup into a defensive battle and remained within striking distance throughout.
The Aztecs held an advantage in possession and total shots, while the teams finished even in shots on target.
The difference ultimately came from the penalty spot.
Washington converted a penalty kick in the 67th minute, providing the decisive goal in a match in which scoring opportunities were at a premium.
Against Portland State, the challenge changes.
This time, San Diego State will enter as the team looking to dictate the match and turn possession and scoring opportunities into goals.
Portland State Searching for First Win
Portland State arrives in San Diego at 0-3, giving the Vikings added urgency as they attempt to break into the win column.
For SDSU, avoiding complacency is essential.
Early-season records can be deceptive in college soccer, particularly as programs experiment with lineups and players adjust to new roles. The Aztecs will need to carry the same intensity they displayed against Washington into a match with considerably different expectations.
San Diego State's ability to strike early could prove important.
Moore's 22nd-minute goal against UC San Diego allowed SDSU to play from ahead, while Miller's second-half goal turned a one-score contest into a much more manageable two-goal advantage.
Another fast start Sunday could force Portland State to chase the match and create additional opportunities for the Aztecs in transition.
SDSU Holds Historical Edge Over Vikings
There isn't much history between these programs.
In fact, Sunday's contest will mark only the second meeting between San Diego State and Portland State.
Their lone previous matchup came nearly three decades ago.
SDSU defeated Portland State 4-0 on Sept. 7, 1997, when the Vikings were playing just their second season at the NCAA Division I level.
That result won't have any bearing on Sunday's match, but it gives the Aztecs an opportunity to remain unbeaten in the all-time series while continuing to establish their identity for 2026.
What to Watch: Can SDSU Turn Chances Into Goals?
The most intriguing storyline Sunday may be San Diego State's offensive efficiency.
Against Washington, the Aztecs demonstrated they could possess the ball and create shots against elite competition. What they couldn't find was the finishing touch necessary to change the scoreboard.
Portland State presents an opportunity to change that.
Moore and Miller have already opened their scoring accounts, while Carlen's early form gives the Aztecs confidence behind their back line.
If SDSU can combine the defensive discipline displayed against Washington with the finishing it showed against UC San Diego, the Aztecs could be positioned for a strong afternoon at home.
There is also a larger opportunity at stake.
A victory would move San Diego State to 2-1 and guarantee a winning record through its first three matches before the Aztecs close their homestand against Pacific.
Aztecs Continue Homestand Against Pacific
San Diego State won't have to wait long for its next opportunity after Sunday.
The Aztecs are scheduled to host Pacific at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at the SDSU Sports Deck.
Early-arriving fans for that match will receive a complimentary SDSU scarlet-and-cream hat.

The first two matches have already provided a glimpse of what the Aztecs could become in 2026: a team capable of producing timely offense, protecting its goal and competing against nationally ranked opposition.

And after coming within one penalty kick of a very different result against the nation's No. 10 team, SDSU will look to turn a promising performance into another mark in the win column.
