Federal investment targets critical runway infrastructure at MGM as Montgomery positions its airport for safer operations, passenger growth and expanded regional economic development
MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Montgomery Regional Airport is set to receive more than $8.5 million in federal funding for runway rehabilitation, a major infrastructure investment aimed at strengthening the airport's operational safety and reliability while positioning MGM for continued passenger and economic growth.
U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures joined Montgomery Regional Airport officials and community leaders at MGM at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, to announce the funding for rehabilitation of the airport's existing runway. Contemporary reporting on the event confirms the $8.5 million announcement and its purpose: runway rehabilitation.
The investment comes as airports across the country compete for federal dollars to modernize aging aviation infrastructure and improve the safety and efficiency of the national transportation network.
For Montgomery, however, the announcement carries implications that extend well beyond the pavement.
The runway is a critical piece of infrastructure supporting commercial passenger service, business and general aviation, military operations, and the broader economic development strategy of Alabama's capital region.
$8.5 Million Investment Targets MGM's Runway
The federal funding will support rehabilitation of the existing runway at Montgomery Regional Airport, helping preserve the pavement and infrastructure required to maintain safe and efficient aircraft operations.
Runway rehabilitation is more than a cosmetic improvement. Airport pavement must withstand repeated aircraft loads, weather exposure, and operational demands while maintaining the surface conditions necessary for safe takeoffs and landings.
The investment therefore addresses one of an airport's most fundamental assets.
The announcement also comes amid a broader federal emphasis on airport infrastructure. In May, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration announced more than $523 million in grants to 332 airports across 43 states, supporting projects including runway rehabilitation, taxiway improvements, apron work, and terminal upgrades.
MGM's Infrastructure Investment Builds on Earlier Federal Support
The latest funding is part of a larger pattern of federal investment in Montgomery Regional Airport's airfield infrastructure.
FAA records show MGM previously received federal Airport Infrastructure Grant funding for projects including runway rehabilitation, runway and taxiway lighting reconstruction, a drainage study, and pavement management work.
Federal records also show MGM received approximately $3.52 million in FY2025 Airport Improvement Program funding for runway and taxiway lighting reconstruction.
Those investments underscore the scale of the long-term effort required to maintain and modernize a commercial-service airport.
For MGM, the Aug. 18 announcement adds another significant piece to that infrastructure strategy.
Figures Highlights Federal Investment in Montgomery
Figures' appearance at MGM placed the airport's infrastructure needs in the broader conversation over federal transportation spending and economic competitiveness.
Airport investments have become increasingly important as communities seek to strengthen connections to national markets, recruit employers and make their regions more attractive for corporate investment.
Montgomery Regional Airport thanked Figures for his role in supporting the investment and his commitment to the airport's future.
The announcement also illustrates how federal infrastructure spending can have highly localized consequences. While appropriations and transportation legislation are negotiated in Washington, their effects ultimately materialize in communities through projects such as runway rehabilitation, terminal construction, road improvements and other transportation investments.
Federal funding for MGM's runway rehabilitation had been a priority in Alabama's congressional delegation. Sen. Katie Britt's FY2026 appropriations requests included $12.33 million for rehabilitation of Montgomery Regional Airport's runway, while the Congressional Record lists additional FY2026 funding associated with runway rehabilitation at MGM.
Why Montgomery Regional Airport Matters to the Region
MGM occupies a strategic position in central Alabama's transportation network.
Beyond scheduled commercial airline service, the airport supports business aviation, military activity, government travel, and other aviation operations that contribute to the region's connectivity.
That makes maintaining airfield infrastructure a matter not simply of passenger convenience but of regional competitiveness.
Modern airports increasingly serve as economic development assets. Companies evaluating communities for investment often consider transportation access, including proximity to reliable commercial aviation. Airports also support tourism, conventions, workforce mobility and connections between businesses and customers in distant markets.
For Montgomery, aviation infrastructure is particularly significant because the airport serves Alabama's capital city and operates within a region with substantial government, military, manufacturing, and business activity.
Safety Remains at the Center
The most immediate benefit of runway rehabilitation remains aviation safety.
The FAA's Airport Improvement Program is designed to support infrastructure projects necessary for airport safety, security, capacity and efficiency. Runways, taxiways, lighting systems and other airfield assets require continual inspection, maintenance and periodic reconstruction as they age.
The federal government's current airport modernization effort has similarly emphasized runway infrastructure as a central safety priority.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in announcing the nationwide infrastructure grants in May that upgrading runway infrastructure is intended to make travel safer and more efficient.
At MGM, the $8.5 million investment is expected to help preserve the runway's structural integrity and support reliable airport operations.
Preparing MGM for the Next Era of Growth
The announcement arrives at an important point in Montgomery Regional Airport's development.
Like regional airports across the country, MGM faces the challenge of maintaining existing infrastructure while preparing for future demand.
Passenger growth, airline service, business recruitment, and regional development can all increase pressure on airport facilities. Infrastructure projects undertaken today consequently have implications that can extend for decades.
The runway investment provides MGM with additional resources to meet current infrastructure needs while strengthening an asset essential to future growth.
For Montgomery and central Alabama, the significance of the project is ultimately straightforward: an airport cannot grow without safe, reliable, and modern airfield infrastructure.
The Aug. 18 announcement represents another step toward ensuring Montgomery Regional Airport has that foundation.
And as communities increasingly compete for investment, jobs, tourism and connectivity, MGM's runway is more than a strip of pavement.
It is part of the infrastructure connecting Alabama's capital region to the rest of the country—and to its economic future.
