The unit will return to its airborne infantry mission after Saber Junction, but Army leaders say the experiment’s lessons will inform a broader push to embed drones across combat formations.
WASHINGTON | The U.S. Army is ending its experiment with a dedicated drone battalion in Europe less than a year after assigning an infantry unit to test how a specialized unmanned formation could operate on a modern battlefield.
The battalion will return to its airborne infantry mission following the conclusion of Exercise Saber Junction 2026, an Army official said Thursday. The multinational training event is scheduled across August and September at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Germany.
The official, who spoke on background, did not identify the battalion or disclose how many soldiers participated in the experiment. The decision was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The Army’s move does not signal an end to its drone modernization campaign. Instead, it could indicate that service leaders increasingly favor distributing unmanned aircraft, electronic warfare systems and counter-drone capabilities across existing combat formations rather than maintaining a stand-alone drone battalion.
That distinction will be closely watched across the Pentagon as the U.S. military races to absorb lessons from Ukraine, where small unmanned aircraft have transformed reconnaissance, targeting, logistics and direct attack operations.
An experiment shaped by Ukraine
U.S. Army Europe and Africa launched the drone battalion experiment in November 2025 in coordination with the Department of the Army and U.S. European Command.
The objective was to study dedicated drone formations—including units fielded by Ukraine—and determine how similar capabilities could support American ground forces. The battalion was also tasked with sending its findings back to Army headquarters as the Pentagon pursued what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called “drone dominance.”
The unit reportedly tested the organization, personnel, command relationships and equipment required to operate unmanned systems at scale. Its work came as Army formations throughout Europe expanded first-person-view drone training, counter-unmanned aircraft instruction and experiments integrating small drones into conventional maneuver units.
U.S. Army Europe and Africa held its first Best Drone Warfighter Competition in December 2025, bringing together teams from armored, cavalry, artillery and air-defense formations. The event was designed to test drone-operator proficiency and support the service’s wider transformation campaign, according to an Army Europe and Africa announcement.
Those efforts reflect a central lesson from Ukraine: Drones are no longer niche assets reserved for specialized aviation or intelligence organizations. They have become an everyday battlefield tool used by troops at increasingly lower echelons.
Saber Junction will provide the final test
Before returning to its infantry role, the experimental battalion will participate in Saber Junction 2026, the Army official said.
The exercise will allow the Army to examine how drone operations function within a large, multinational combat scenario involving U.S. forces, NATO allies and partner militaries.
This year’s Saber Junction centers on the 173rd Mobile Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), which will validate its ability to deploy rapidly, integrate advanced capabilities and generate combat power across the European theater. The Army describes the exercise as a major readiness and lethality assessment for its permanently assigned forces in Europe.
The official did not disclose which lessons would determine the drone battalion’s final assessment or whether another unit could assume portions of its mission.
Army planners will likely examine several questions:
- Should drone operators remain permanently assigned to maneuver formations?
- How many unmanned systems should be available at the squad, platoon, company and battalion levels?
- Should reconnaissance and attack drones operate under a single command?
- How should drone units coordinate with artillery, electronic warfare, intelligence and air defense?
- How quickly can damaged or destroyed drones be replaced?
- Can Army formations sustain high-volume drone operations without creating a new logistics burden?
Answers to those questions could shape future force structure, doctrine and procurement decisions even if the dedicated battalion itself disappears.
A shift toward drones across the force
The Army’s decision comes as Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the service’s vice chief of staff, released a strategic roadmap titled “The Army Azimuth.”
LaNeve’s guidance calls for an Army prepared to defeat enemies employing stand-off weapons, unmanned systems and weapons of mass destruction. At the same time, he emphasized soldier readiness, warrior ethos and small-unit tactical proficiency.
The message suggests the Army does not view drones as a substitute for conventional combat skills. Instead, unmanned aircraft are expected to become another capability that infantry, armor, artillery and support formations must employ while maintaining their core missions.
That approach aligns with the Army’s “Transformation in Contact” initiative, under which operational brigades test emerging technology before the service commits to large-scale procurement or permanent organizational changes.
Ending the European drone battalion could therefore represent the completion of a limited experiment rather than a retreat from unmanned warfare. The more consequential question is whether the Army can translate the unit’s findings into standardized training, doctrine and equipment across the force.
Pentagon pushes for drone dominance
The Pentagon has made low-cost unmanned systems a major modernization priority.
A June 2025 executive order directed the military to expand its drone capabilities and strengthen the domestic unmanned-aircraft industry. Hegseth followed with a July memorandum titled “Unleashing U.S. Military Drone Dominance.”
In the memorandum, Hegseth warned that American units lacked the lethal small drones required for modern warfare. He directed the department to accelerate procurement, reduce bureaucratic barriers and give operational commanders greater freedom to purchase, test and train with unmanned systems.
The policy was intended to move the military away from a model dominated by small numbers of expensive, highly specialized aircraft. Recent conflicts have instead demonstrated the utility of inexpensive drones that can be acquired in large quantities, modified rapidly and treated as expendable battlefield equipment.
The challenge is not simply buying more aircraft.
The military must also develop secure supply chains, train operators, assign radio frequencies, protect drone networks against electronic attack, manage airspace and create procedures for coordinating thousands of unmanned systems with crewed aircraft and ground forces.
CENTCOM takes a different organizational approach
While the Army closes its experimental battalion in Europe, U.S. Central Command is establishing a new multinational formation dedicated to attack drones.
CENTCOM announced Task Force Falcon Strike on Aug. 13, describing it as the first multinational, multidomain attack-drone task force. The organization will operate one-way attack systems in the air, on the surface and beneath the sea with personnel from the United States and regional partners, according to the official CENTCOM release.
Falcon Strike follows Task Force Scorpion Strike, a Middle East-based formation established in 2025 to employ one-way attack drones.
The different approaches reflect different missions.
CENTCOM’s task forces are operational organizations designed to field attack capabilities rapidly with regional partners. The Army’s European battalion was an experimental formation intended to test force structure and generate lessons for the wider service.
Both efforts support the Pentagon’s drone agenda, but they illustrate that the military has not settled on a single organizational model.
What the Army must preserve
The danger for the Army is that useful lessons could be lost when the battalion returns to its traditional infantry mission.
Drone warfare evolves faster than the military’s conventional acquisition and doctrine-development systems. Hardware and software can change within weeks, while formal procurement programs often take years.
Preserving the experiment’s expertise will require more than an after-action report. The Army will need to retain experienced operators, incorporate lessons into combat training centers and ensure that successful tactics reach units outside Europe.
It must also decide how to institutionalize drone proficiency without creating organizations that separate unmanned expertise from the soldiers expected to employ it in combat.
Embedding drone teams inside conventional formations may improve integration and make unmanned systems a routine part of small-unit operations. A dedicated battalion, however, can concentrate expertise, logistics and electronic-warfare support while generating mass at decisive points.
The most effective force may ultimately combine both approaches.
A test of whether Army experimentation can scale
The decision to end the experimental battalion will be judged less by the unit’s short lifespan than by what the Army does with its findings.
Modern armies must be willing to create, test and dissolve formations without treating every discontinued experiment as a failure. But rapid experimentation only produces value when lessons lead to deployable capabilities.
The Army now has an opportunity to demonstrate that its transformation model can move faster than the battlefield.
If drone expertise spreads across infantry, armor, artillery, aviation and support units, the European battalion may be remembered as a temporary organization that helped accelerate broader change.
If the knowledge disperses without producing common standards, equipment or doctrine, the experiment could become another warning about the Pentagon’s difficulty turning battlefield lessons into lasting combat power.
