State delegation returns from one of the world's premier aerospace and defense trade shows with two major industrial expansion announcements, more than 50 executive meetings, and a strengthened position in the global competition for aviation, aerospace and defense investment.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Governor Kay Ivey announced Tuesday that Alabama strengthened its position as one of America's fastest-growing aerospace and defense hubs following a highly successful showing at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, where the state's economic development team secured two significant industrial expansion announcements and conducted more than 50 strategic meetings with global aviation, aerospace and defense companies.
The results underscore Alabama's broader strategy of leveraging its expanding aerospace ecosystem, skilled workforce and business-friendly environment to compete for international investment at a time when defense spending and commercial aviation manufacturing continue to accelerate worldwide.
"Our 10th and final Farnborough Airshow under my administration featured our strongest effort yet," Governor Ivey said. "We brought our A-game by showcasing Alabama's advantages to companies looking for opportunities to expand and invest. With more than 40 percent job growth across aviation, aerospace and defense over the past decade, Alabama is poised to reach even greater heights. The sky truly is the limit for Sweet Home Alabama."
Widely regarded as one of the aerospace industry's most influential trade events, the Farnborough International Airshow brings together aircraft manufacturers, defense contractors, suppliers, investors and government officials from around the globe. More than 1,500 exhibitors representing approximately 60 countries participated in this year's exhibition outside London, making it one of the world's premier venues for industrial recruitment, strategic partnerships and commercial aviation announcements.
Major Announcements Deliver Jobs and Investment
Alabama's presence at Farnborough immediately translated into measurable economic development victories.
Among the week's most significant announcements was Redwire's decision to expand its Huntsville aerospace operations, reinforcing North Alabama's reputation as a center for advanced space technologies and national security innovation.
The state also announced that Doncasters, the United Kingdom-based manufacturer specializing in superalloys and high-precision aerospace casting components, will establish a second Alabama operation in Auburn.
Combined, the two projects represent approximately $68 million in capital investment and are expected to create 220 new high-skilled jobs, adding further momentum to Alabama's rapidly expanding aerospace manufacturing sector.
Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair said Alabama's long-term investments are producing tangible results in one of the world's most competitive industries.
"Alabama leaders have made a deliberate decision to expand our presence in industries where we already excel," McNair said. "From rocket systems in North Alabama to commercial aviation manufacturing in South Alabama and the extensive supplier network supporting our military installations, Alabama has established itself as an aerospace and defense destination."
She added that increasing defense expenditures among the United States and allied nations create additional opportunities for Alabama to attract new industrial operations.
Expanding Alabama's Global Footprint
The 2026 Farnborough delegation reflected Alabama's growing international ambitions.
McNair co-led the state delegation alongside Liz Filmore, Governor Ivey's Chief of Staff. The delegation also included U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville, Congressman Dale Strong, Alabama Workforce Secretary Greg Reed, Montgomery Airport Authority Executive Director Loyd Jenkins, along with leaders representing higher education institutions, workforce development organizations and local economic development agencies.
Industry veteran Bob Smith, Commerce's aerospace industry specialist, described Farnborough as one of the most valuable venues available for international business recruitment.
"Nearly every major aerospace company in the world has a presence here," Smith said. "It provides exceptional global visibility for Alabama and reinforces our reputation as a premier aerospace and defense location."
Alabama Makes History at Farnborough
This year's exhibition also marked a milestone for Alabama's international marketing efforts.
While the state traditionally operates an exhibition booth inside the convention center, Alabama became the first U.S. state to establish its own chalet along Farnborough's flight line—a highly visible location overlooking daily aircraft demonstrations and adjacent to many of the aerospace industry's largest corporate exhibitors.
The prominent "Made in Alabama" branding placed the state directly in front of thousands of aerospace executives, military officials, suppliers and investors throughout the week.
The expanded footprint also created additional meeting space for Alabama communities traveling with the delegation to host prospective investors and conduct business discussions.
Building the Pipeline for Future Projects
Beyond the announced expansions, the Alabama Department of Commerce focused heavily on cultivating future investment opportunities.
Commerce officials held meetings with companies already operating within Alabama, businesses actively evaluating new U.S. locations, emerging aerospace firms exploring expansion opportunities and numerous international site-selection consultants responsible for advising corporate investment decisions.
The meeting schedule included:
- More than 50 executive meetings with aerospace, aviation and defense companies.
- Nine meetings with existing Alabama aerospace employers.
- Fourteen meetings with companies actively evaluating locations for future projects.
- Nine meetings involving projects in preliminary development.
- More than twenty meetings with consultants, advisors and international site-selection professionals.
Officials indicated many of these conversations could develop into future announcements involving advanced manufacturing, aerospace supply chains, defense production and aviation technology.
Strategic Investments Strengthen Recruitment Efforts
Commerce Chief Officer of Global Business Christina Stimpson credited recent state investments with expanding Alabama's international recruitment capabilities.
The establishment of the Alabama Development Fund, expanded European operations and the reopening of international offices in Japan and South Korea have significantly enhanced Alabama's ability to compete for global investment.
Those initiatives complement hundreds of millions of dollars invested in workforce development, industrial site preparation and career technical education—factors increasingly cited by international companies evaluating expansion opportunities in the United States.
Aerospace Remains a Strategic Economic Driver
Alabama's aerospace sector has become one of the state's fastest-growing economic engines, anchored by major employers supporting commercial aviation, military aviation, missile defense, space exploration and advanced manufacturing.
The concentration of aerospace companies in Huntsville, Mobile, Auburn and other regional industrial centers has positioned Alabama as an increasingly important contributor to both national security and global aerospace production.
Officials say the relationships developed during the Farnborough International Airshow will continue long after the exhibition concludes, providing Alabama with additional opportunities to compete for future investment projects while reinforcing its standing among the world's leading aerospace and defense destinations.
As global demand grows for advanced aviation technologies, defense capabilities and resilient supply chains, Alabama leaders believe the state's expanding workforce, industrial infrastructure and pro-business climate position it to capture the next generation of aerospace investment.
