Alabama Congresswoman Joins Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Shaping Democratic Proposals on Health Care Costs, Access, Medicare, and Prescription Drug Pricing
WASHINGTON, D.C. | U.S. Representative Terri Sewell has been selected by House Democratic leadership to help lead a major new effort focused on lowering health care costs and expanding access to care, positioning the Alabama lawmaker at the center of one of the party’s most prominent policy initiatives heading into the next phase of congressional debate.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced that Sewell will serve as co-convener of the Cost of Living Health Care Working Group alongside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The panel is one of five newly established House Democratic working groups tasked with developing proposals to address the financial pressures facing American households.
The initiative comes as health care affordability continues to rank among the top concerns for voters nationwide. Rising insurance premiums, prescription drug costs, hospital expenses, and access challenges remain central issues in the national political conversation.
Democrats Focus on Cost-of-Living Challenges
The Health Care Working Group is part of a broader Democratic strategy focused on lowering everyday expenses for American families. Additional working groups will examine housing affordability, grocery prices, energy and utility costs, and caregiving expenses.
According to Democratic leadership, each panel will bring together lawmakers from across the caucus's ideological spectrum to craft policy recommendations that can attract broad support within the party.
“We are grateful that Leader Jeffries has selected us to serve as co-conveners of the Cost of Living Health Care Working Group,” Sewell and Ocasio-Cortez said in a joint statement.
“Health care costs remain one of the biggest challenges facing working families, and ensuring every American has access to quality, affordable health care has never been more important.”
The lawmakers also framed the effort as a response to ongoing debates over federal health care spending and access to government-supported health programs.
“As Republicans and the Trump administration pursue devastating cuts to health care programs that millions rely on, Democrats must put forward a bold vision that lowers costs, expands access, and strengthens care for future generations,” the statement said.
Sewell Brings Key Health Care Experience
Sewell’s appointment highlights her growing influence on health care policy within the Democratic Caucus.
The Alabama congresswoman serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees Medicare and numerous federal health care programs. She also chairs the New Democrat Coalition’s Health Care Working Group, where she has focused on policies designed to improve affordability and accessibility.
Throughout her congressional career, Sewell has consistently advocated for strengthening Medicare and Medicaid, preserving protections under the Affordable Care Act, reducing prescription drug costs, and addressing health disparities affecting rural and underserved communities.
Her district, which includes much of Alabama’s Black Belt region, faces some of the same health care access challenges that rural areas across the nation face, including provider shortages, hospital financial pressures, and disparities in health outcomes.
Policy Development Effort Underway
The working group will collaborate closely with senior Democratic committee leaders, including Richard Neal, the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, and Frank Pallone, ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Their task will be to develop policy recommendations that Democratic leaders can incorporate into a broader legislative agenda centered on affordability and economic security.
Party officials say the initiative is intended to produce practical proposals addressing rising household expenses while reinforcing access to critical health care services.
Political analysts note that health care remains one of the most influential issues in federal elections, often ranking alongside inflation, economic growth, and public safety as a top voter concern.
For Sewell, the new leadership role provides an opportunity to help shape national health care policy while elevating Alabama’s voice in discussions about affordability, access, and the future of federal health programs.
As Congress prepares for upcoming budget and health policy debates, the recommendations from the Health Care Working Group could play a significant role in shaping Democratic priorities on Medicare, Medicaid, prescription drug pricing, and broader health care reform.
The announcement underscores House Democrats’ broader strategy of focusing on cost-of-living issues while presenting policy alternatives to reduce financial burdens on working families across the United States.
