U.S. Secret Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation secure scene as suspect taken into custody; event abruptly canceled
WASHINGTON | President Donald Trump was safely evacuated Saturday evening after a reported shooting incident disrupted the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, sending attendees scrambling for cover and prompting a swift response from federal law enforcement.
The event, held at a Washington hotel and attended by senior administration officials, journalists, and public figures, was abruptly canceled following what authorities described as a “shooting incident.” The U.S. Secret Service confirmed that the president, First Lady Melania Trump, and other guests were safely removed from the venue.
In a statement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said a suspect is currently in custody and that investigators are “actively assessing the situation.” Officials have not yet disclosed details regarding motive, injuries, or whether the president was the intended target.
Trump later posted on Truth Social that law enforcement instructed him to leave the premises as a precaution. He indicated he would address the nation during a press conference from the White House later in the evening and that the high-profile media event would be rescheduled.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene inside the ballroom. A reporter with 'TELL IT LIKE IT IS' News said multiple loud bangs were heard before security personnel rushed the stage. Guests were instructed to take cover beneath tables as agents formed a protective perimeter around the president.
“They shielded him and escorted him out,” said Marty Makary, who attended the dinner and described the rapid response by security personnel. “Everyone started ducking.”
Among those present at the event were Vice President JD Vance, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, traditionally a high-profile gathering celebrating the relationship between the press and the presidency, rarely faces disruptions of this magnitude. Saturday’s incident underscores ongoing security concerns surrounding major political events in the nation’s capital.
Authorities have not indicated whether additional threats remain. Law enforcement presence in the area was significantly increased as investigations continued late into the evening.
