Trump Announces Two-Week Ceasefire with Iran as Strait of Hormuz Crisis Reaches Critical Turning Point

U.S., Iran, and Israel signal temporary halt to hostilities amid global energy fears, rising casualties, and high-stakes diplomacy mediated by Pakistan

DUBAI/WASHINGTON |
Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, marking a dramatic de-escalation in a rapidly intensifying regional conflict that has threatened global energy security and drawn in multiple nations.

The agreement — brokered with mediation from Pakistan — comes just hours after Washington issued a stark ultimatum demanding that Tehran reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face widespread attacks on critical infrastructure.

The strait, a vital maritime corridor handling roughly 20% of global oil shipments, has been at the center of escalating tensions, with disruptions already triggering spikes in global energy markets and raising fears of a broader economic downturn.

Ceasefire Framework and Conditions

According to U.S. officials, the ceasefire is contingent upon Iran halting its blockade of oil and gas transit through the strait, while both sides pause offensive operations. Trump described the agreement as a “double-sided ceasefire,” claiming U.S. military objectives had already been achieved and that negotiations toward a long-term peace framework were underway.

Iranian state media, however, framed the development differently, describing the agreement as a concession by Washington and signaling that formal talks are expected to begin Friday in Islamabad.

Complicating the fragile truce, Israeli officials confirmed their participation in the ceasefire, though missile activity from Iran toward Israel was reported shortly after the announcement — underscoring the volatility of the situation.

Escalation Before De-escalation

The ceasefire caps a day of intense military escalation. U.S. and Israeli strikes targeted key Iranian infrastructure, including transportation networks and energy facilities, with operations extending to Kharg Island — Iran’s primary oil export hub.

In response, Iran expanded its threat posture, warning of retaliatory strikes against Gulf infrastructure and reportedly targeting maritime and petrochemical assets across the region. Explosions were reported in Doha late Tuesday, highlighting the widening geographic scope of the conflict.

The six-week war has resulted in more than 5,000 deaths across multiple countries, including significant civilian casualties, intensifying international concern and calls for de-escalation.

Global Stakes: Energy, Security, and Diplomacy

The temporary ceasefire arrives at a critical juncture for global markets. The partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz has already driven oil prices higher, amplifying inflation concerns and increasing the risk of a global economic slowdown.

International leaders, including officials from the United Nations, have warned of catastrophic humanitarian and economic consequences if hostilities resume.

At the same time, the agreement introduces a narrow diplomatic window. U.S. officials indicated that Iran’s reported 10-point proposal could serve as a foundation for broader negotiations aimed at stabilizing the region.

Strategic Outlook

While the ceasefire provides immediate relief, defense analysts caution that the situation remains highly unstable. Continued missile launches, unresolved strategic objectives, and competing narratives from Washington and Tehran highlight the fragility of the agreement.

The next two weeks will be critical in determining whether the ceasefire evolves into a lasting diplomatic breakthrough — or merely pauses a conflict with far-reaching geopolitical and economic consequences.
