Sophomore standout Erin Nuwer records third career no-hitter, powering Tennessee to 8-0 win behind explosive bats and dominant pitching in Knoxville
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. | No. 4 Tennessee softball delivered a statement performance Tuesday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium, combining elite pitching and timely power hitting to secure an 8-0 run-rule victory over Tennessee Tech.
At the center of the win was sophomore pitcher Erin Nuwer, who etched her name deeper into Lady Vol history by tossing the third no-hitter of her career — and her second of the season. The East Aurora, New York native controlled the game from the circle, allowing zero hits while striking out three across six dominant innings. The performance marks the 65th no-hitter in program history and further solidifies Nuwer as one of the SEC’s rising stars.
Tennessee (29-3) wasted little time setting the tone offensively. Emma Clarke sparked the second inning with a double to right-center, before Maddi Rutan followed with a towering two-run homer to left — her third of the season and 24th of her career — giving the Lady Vols an early 2-0 lead.
The offense continued to build momentum in the fourth inning. Sophia Knight ignited the rally with a triple, later scoring as Tennessee extended its lead to 4-0 behind clutch hitting from Mackenzie Butt and Clarke, who finished a perfect two-for-three with two doubles.
The Lady Vols broke the game open in the fifth inning, loading the bases with no outs. Gabby Leach came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Elsa Morrison, while Meredith Barnhart delivered a breakthrough moment with her first career hit — a two-run double that pushed the lead to 7-0.
Alannah Leach put the finishing touch on the night in the sixth inning, blasting a solo home run to right-center — her fifth of the season — to trigger the run-rule and seal Tennessee’s emphatic victory.
Beyond the power display, Tennessee’s lineup showed depth and consistency. Sophia Knight and Emma Clarke each recorded multi-hit performances, while Clarke, Barnhart, and Saviya Morgan combined for four doubles, showcasing the team’s ability to generate offense across the order.
With the win, Tennessee continues to assert itself as a national contender, blending dominant pitching with a high-powered offense that ranks among the nation’s most efficient.
