Aggies seek redemption in SEC opener as they face a Bulldogs squad riding momentum; Yakel, Diaz, and Denigan headline the showdown.
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M soccer team kicks off its 14th season in the Southeastern Conference on Friday night with a pivotal league opener against the No. 24 Georgia Bulldogs at Ellis Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Aggies (3-1-3) enter the match looking to rebound from a narrow 2-1 loss at No. 4 TCU. Wins against Lamar, UConn, and Lafayette, paired with draws against Baylor, Texas State, and Stephen F. Austin, have given A&M valuable non-conference experience. Senior defender Bella Yakel has been the ironwoman of the squad, logging all 630 minutes so far this season after transferring from Portland with more than 4,000 career minutes already to her name.
Offensively, Leah Diaz leads the Aggies with 10 points (three goals, four assists), supported by Trinity Buchanan and Kaylee Noble, who have combined for six goals and four assists. Goalkeepers Erica Defferding and Sydney Fuller have each recorded a shutout, underscoring the team’s defensive depth.
Texas A&M holds a 7-4 series advantage over Georgia since joining the SEC in 2012. However, the Bulldogs (4-2-2) have had the Aggies’ number in recent years, winning the last three matchups—including back-to-back tournament eliminations. Georgia’s Summer Denigan enters as the danger player, boasting 13 points with six goals on the season. At the same time, Hannah Folliard has provided a sturdy presence in goal with a 0.58 goals-against average.
With Georgia looking to extend its streak and Texas A&M seeking to reclaim momentum, Friday’s clash promises intensity, drama, and implications for the SEC standings.
