Late Goal Stuns Warhawks as Montevallo Falcons Snatch Victory

A decisive strike in the closing minutes lifts the University of Montevallo past AUM, handing the Warhawks a heartbreaking loss.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The University of Montevallo Falcons handed the Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks a crushing defeat Thursday night, netting a decisive late goal that sealed a 2-1 victory in Gulf South Conference play.

For most of the match, the Warhawks appeared poised to secure a statement win, controlling possession and creating several key opportunities. But a lapse in the final minutes opened the door for Montevallo, who capitalized with a clinical finish that left the AUM defense stunned.

First Half Momentum

The Warhawks came out strong, pressing early and finding the net midway through the first half on a well-worked attacking move. Their defense stood tall against multiple Falcon counterattacks, entering halftime with a narrow 1-0 lead.

Second Half Turnaround

Montevallo equalized shortly after the restart, shifting momentum in their favor. Despite a string of Warhawk chances, including two shots rattling the crossbar, the Falcons maintained pressure and struck the decisive blow in the 87th minute.

Postgame Reaction

Warhawks head coach Julianne Herrity praised her team’s fight but acknowledged the late breakdown proved costly.

“We did a lot of things right tonight,” he said. “But at this level, every second matters. Montevallo took their chance, and we paid for that one lapse.”

The defeat drops the Warhawks further down the conference standings, while Montevallo strengthens its bid for postseason positioning.

AUM will look to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next matchup against Alabama State Hornets, while Montevallo hopes to build on the momentum from their dramatic road win.
